A Light Lunch
Yesterday afternoon, I drove up to Austin to have a light lunch with my Dad at Ironworks, a legendary Austin barbecue joint.
It’s the perfect barbecue spot–old, simple and really really good.
There’s even a cute little wood stove. But that’s not where they cook the barbecue.
You’re all familiar with Dad. He’s the man who hates Christmas and loves gravy.
Now we get to the real meat of the issue (get it?) A lovely light barbecue lunch.
Yes, you heard that correctly. A light lunch. A girl’s got to watch her figure.
Have I mentioned how much I love barbecue? Particularly ribs? I love ribs.
I really love ribs.
It seriously excites me.
I just can’t help myself.
The worst part is you think I would be embarrassed about being seen like this in public, but I’m not. At the moment, I’m simply in a coma of pure barbecue bliss.
Obviously.
I’m embarrassed to even show you this. As my mother in law would say, the Queen won’t be inviting me over any time soon. As my Dad would say, I’m not acting like I’ve been to town before. There’s still meat in my teeth. It’s terrible really. (That’s why he’s not in any of these pictures. Would you want to be seen with this face?)
But as bad as I look, it’s oh so delicious.
After wiping all the sauce off my face and hands, I did what any sophisticated eater of true Texas barbecue. I cleansed my palate with crackers. My Dad informed me that any true, good Texas barbecue joint will offer you crackers and white bread, never wheat.
And I’m the sophisticated type.
Did I mention the pecan pie is really good? Well, it is. Or it was.
I had so much fun at my barbecue lunch with Dad, that I think I’ll meet him again for lunch at Ironworks soon.
After all, a girl can always use a light lunch to kick off her weekend.

Oh gosh Duckie . . . your pictures made me drool! That looks like some seriously good barbeque!!! I love ribs and I adore pecan pie. When I come to Texas, you are just going to have to take me there! Oh man, I LOVE bbq too! In fact, the things the make me drool most when I watch FoodTV is when they do shows on bbq’s.
Your dad sounds like quite the character – I’d like to have lunch with him too!

That picture of you with the bbq all over your face reminded me of the time you dropped a rib and got it in your hair and all over your clothes. Then you went on a date covered in bbq sauce. Lol. Guess some thing never change.

Oh, how I love barbecue. I’ve even been known to buy it out of the back of gas stations and pick-up trucks on the side of the road. It’s almost a problem, really!

I love that you say that you randomly break out in dance – I do too (much the chagrin of my hubby). At night, while supper’s cooking and we’re waiting for my hubby to get home, my boys and I turn up the radio and have “Dance Party Time” in the kitchen. It’s tons of fun!

Oh duck- you just do not know how I love my BBQ and they just do not have good ones here…they think brisket is for boiling…I so wanted ribs today, but we stayed in again and I made French Onion Soup…and you torture me with the pee-caan pie…although they are better homemade!
…and dance…we do at home now…put on the Johnny Cash or those other cowboys and scoot across that kitchen floor! I bet the dogs would run around and bark to the music too…

I love barbecue too. I could live on ribs. I think if my execution date were set, I’d have a hard time choosing between ribs and pulled pork for my last meal.
A new barbecue restaurant opened in my neighborhood. I haven’t tried it yet, but I’m hoping it’s authentic, although it’s probalby not. Regardless, I plan to have a nice, messy rib dinner at some point.
Yes, it’s very important to be messy when you eat ribs!!!

I am starving now!!!!!!!! I love ribs too but don’t usually love the BBQ joint’s type with the smoked meat. But then again, I have never been to TX. I would have sauce all over my face right along with you. Too cute!
