Announcing the Princesses (and Princes) of Pie at the Pond

Posted on February 26th, 2009 in Stories

On the fourth day of pie week, I give you…the princesses and princes of Pie Week!  Several of my darling Invisible Friends were kind enough to send me sweet pie memories, recipes and pictures.

As a reward, you win these fabulous awards:

you-are-a-sweet-heart-300x208

From the far away land of Cakelaw’s Kingdom, she sent this sweet award.

cutesbloggeraward

And in the spirit of friendship and harmony, Queen Jenn from the Land of Tater Tots and Jello sent over this offering of peace.

sisterhoodaward1

Finally, Princess Katie from Sunshine and Bubblegum sent smiles and giggles over with the Sisterhood award.

Of course, no princess would be complete without her tiara…

So wear it loud and proud, ladies (and gentlemen.)

Princess Lauren from Theatrical Misadventures said: “I think the best pie I ever had was a huckleberry pie two years ago. I share a birthday with a very good friend of mine, and her aunt made us this amazing huckleberry pie for our birthday! Normally I’m really not a fruit pie girl…I like the cream-based pies better. But this…this wasn’t just pie. It was magic. And huckleberries being a very Montana thing, it’s really a fond memory I have from home. But really, best. pie. ever!”

Princess Tessa said:

“This pie is very special to me.  It was one my paternal grandfather made every year for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  He passed away 12 or so years ago and we make it every year.  Year before last we weren’t going to have it.  My maternal grandfather passed away just one week before Christmas.  No one felt much like celebrating the holiday but there were young kids that still believed in Santa so we had to press on.  I made the pie myself.  I couldn’t imagine a Thanksgiving or Christmas without it.  I feel that even though he isn’t still with us physically, he’s represented in our family by that pie.  It was his.  It was of him.  It helps invoke his spirit during those festive events.”

And then she served up this:

Pumpkin Cream Cheese Pie

8 oz Philadelphia Cream Cheese

½ Cup Karo Syrup

Blend well and pour into pie shells.

2 Eggs

1 Can Pumpkin

½ Cup Brown Sugar

½ tsp Salt

1 tsp Cinnamon

½ tsp Nutmeg

1 Cup Carnation Evaporated Milk

Combine above ingredients and pour into pie shells over cream cheese mixture. Bake at 350 degrees until done.

Princess Donna made this drool-worthy banana pudding pie at My Tasty Treasures. She even put crumbs on top for me.

I love crumbs.

But I digress.

Princess Diana of Diana Takes A Bite had some wonderful musings to share:

“I wasn’t planning on submitting anything for pie week.  I’ve never made a crust of any sort nor have I even endeavored to fill one of those frozen pre-made ones from the grocery store.  In other words, I am a disgraceful excuse for an aspiring domestic kitchen goddess.  Sure I’ve mastered the perfect chocolate chip cookie and can make a mean peanut butter paisley brownie, but how can I call myself a baker/amateur chef if I’ve never made a pie?  I can’t.

But what I lack in pie-making abilities, I make up for with my unparalleled devotion to watching romantic comedies over and over and over again.  I watch them so many times that I commit them to memory and, much to the aggravation of my viewing partners, can follow along with my favorite quotes word for word.  One of those favorite quotes comes courtesy of When Harry Met Sally - a film that in many ways, defines how I, like Sally, view pie.  In other words, I know how I like it, and if it falls short of that expectation, I don’t want it.

The scene takes place early in the movie at the diner where Sally and Harry stop for dinner on their way to New York.

Sally: I’d like the chef salad, please, with the oil and vinegar on the side.  And the apple pie a la mode….But I’d like the pie heated, and I don’t want the ice cream on top. I want it on the side. And I’d like strawberry instead of vanilla if you have it. If not, then no ice cream, just whipped cream, but only if it’s real. If it’s out of a can, then nothing.

Waitress: Not even the pie?

Sally: No, just the pie. But then not heated.

Just like Sally, I am very particular about my pie.  I prefer my pies to be of the apple, blueberry or peach variety.  They must come in a homemade, flaky crust, be devoid of the gross glue-like filling texture that resembles compote or jam, and must be served warm with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.  There is to be no whipped cream in the vicinity and the ice cream has to be vanilla.  No substitutions are allowed.  If I am to stray from the fruit pies (something I do not feel inclined to do), I will only find satisfaction from a chocolate mud pie with an Oreo cookie bottom, or from the occasional pecan pie.  Yes, I will partake in the peeeeecan pieeeee, but never in pumpkin.  Not on Thanksgiving, and not ever.”

Princess Louise gave us a fabulous poem and her own pie post:

“Little King pippin he built a fine hall

Piecrust and pastry crust, that was the wall

The windows were made of black pudding and white

And slated with pancakes you ne’re see the like.”

And her own post on National Pie Day.

Princess Katherine made a fabulous Key Lime Pie just for me.  Go check it out.  If you’re lucky, I’ll save you a piece.

Princess Marjie concocted some fabulous apple pie ice cream, which in my opinion, is just like cold, creamy pie.  Now if she could just mail me a vat, I’d be delighted.

Princess Reeni at Cinnamon Spice and Everything Nice combined my two favorite things:  spaghetti and pie into…a spaghetti pie.  It’s inspiring.  Go see for yourself.  Have a big piece for me.  It’s that good.

Princess Cheryl had this to say: “My favorite is the coconut cream pie at Shari’s Restaurant.  They are the best in the world. No birthday cake for me, I want a birthday pie!”

I totally agree.

Princess Leni of Tavolini said: “My pie story is a quick one–my grandmother made excellent pie crusts (and all kinds of food) but she was very, very secretive with her recipes. When she passed, we found around ten homemade pie crusts in her freezer. We distributed them throughout the family and ate them on holidays, even when we weren’t together. No one has been able to replicate my grandmother’s pie crust recipe, but we still talk about them to this day.”

Princess Marie said: ” My absolute favorite is Rhubarb pie, wait no, it’s raisin, oh no, it’s lemon meringue . . . apple, butterscotch, chocolate, strawberry rhubarb . . . eeeekk!! I’m just a pie nut full stop!

“I have a confession. When I was in Utah my friend Lenis brought two Maria Calender pies to dinner on Friday night, a Lemon Meringue and a Chocolate Cream. THEY WERE TO DIE FOR!!!!! Especially the Lemon meringue. I am no stranger to pie. I wish I had a dollar for everyone I’d baked in my life! I’d be able to retire, and well, eat pie all day for the rest of my life!!”

Me too, Marie.  Me too.

Princess Lisa of the Kingdom Magic Sprinkles asked: “Can there be a Prince of Pie? My 10 year old son LOVES pie – Key lime pie is the bestest. He also made a shirt that says “I like pie” (which is only l.I.k.e because the long “I” sound rhymes so well and rolls off the tongue as silkily as actual pie does). Anyway, he also loves pi (3.14159265 blah blah blah). I’ll see if I can scare up a pic for your consideration.”

I’m still waiting for the picture!  And of course he can!  Give him a tiara.  He’ll love it.

Princess Fat Dietician recalled: “Regarding pie, when I was a middle school teacher we celebrated March 14th (3.14) as π day. We had pizza pie, apple pie, chocolate pie, and we of course worked on how to find the area and circumference of circles.”

When I was in middle school, they didn’t give us pie.  They just beat us.  Moving along…

Princess Faith confessed: “My favorite pie is Chocolate Cream Pie .. more because it’s chocolate and less because it’s pie though!”

Princess Megan said (and I heartily agree): “APPLE. Apple is the dominant pie. People who claim other kinds of pie are better have never had a truly spectacular apple pie. I have nothing else to say…except APPLE!”

Princess Barbara whipped up this strawberry pie delight at her blog, Barbara Bakes.

That’s good news for the Struggling Writer, who announced his favorite pie was strawberry.

Princess Cathy said: “I am a pie purist. I like them all, but don’t try to combine them or otherwise do anything too weird to them. For example, the Thanksgiving Twofer Pie (half pumpkin and half pecan) was just wrong. But pumpkin? Sure! Pecan? Absolutely!”

Princess Jessica of Food Mayhem whipped these up for us:

Girlie Pie

Red, White, and Blue Pie

Cheddar Crust Apple Pie

Princess Bethany whipped up this banana cream pie.  She says it was for her husband, but I know better.  After all, it’s all about me.  She even included her special homemade crust recipe!

Princess Megan has accomplished a stunning feat, Invisible Friends.  She made a HEALTHY CHOCOLATE Pie.  I’m serious.  Check it out.  You’ll fall over in a ladylike swoon clutching a hand to your forehead.

I’ll get the smelling salts.

deep-dish-apple-pie-0081

And our most devoted Princess, Princess Sugar Fairy, has outdone us all in devotion and passion.  This ambitious pie princess got up at  5 a.m. to whip up this fabulous deep dish apple pie for us.  The picture is from her site.  It’s good.  It’s very good.  And she’s my new hero. She had apple pie for breakfast.

Check out that wall of buttery crust goodness. Drool.

Of course, how could we forget about custard pie, also known as cheesecake?

Mrs. Delightful and her chocolate chip cheesecake have left me cursing the heavens for my allergies to chocolate, while Complicated Mama served up a samoa cheesecake.  Sweet wounded wuffles.   Those are the best custard pies I ever saw.

I want to thank everyone for submitting their sweet memories, tasty concoctions and pie-worthy poems and stories.  You make the Pond go ’round.  Congrats to all the Pie Princesses and Princes!  Cut a thick slice of pie and enjoy your new royal status!

Stay tuned, Invisible Friends!  Tomorrow, we have pecan pie muffins!  Then Saturday we have a dedication to apple pie and Tuesday, the grand finale of Pie Week! Speaking of next week, we’ll have the a new recipe and the return Twirl ( I can hear you cheering Ingrid) and the Gift will be back, as well as the Rubber Chicken and his new friend Seymore from the Smoky Mountain Cafe.

Stay tuned!
