Creative Woman: Jaime from sophistimom.com

Shameless Plug: Check my post out at Venus vs. Mars today!  Then come back because…

Today, our featured Creative woman of the Pond is Jaime from sophistimom.com!

The fabulous Brooke from Conversations with a Cupcake , who was a featured creative woman a few weeks ago, thought she’d be a fine fit.  And boy, was she right!

Jaime is a mom with three adorable kids and a innate sense of elegance and sophistication.

We don’t have much of that in the Pond.  Obviously.

Anyway, she adores literature, whips up chic dishes and has a BA in design from Brigham Young University.  Let’s chat with her, shall we?

What made you want to start blogging?

I started a blog a few years ago, but was never serious or consistent about it.  Then last summer, I heard how some women were turning their blogs into careers.  I thought I might be able to succeed in a similar way.  So I got serious and started from scratch.

Were you always such an avid reader?  What do you love about reading?

I wasn’t much of a reader as a kid.  I think my school pushed so hard to make us read, that none of us had time to actually sit down and read for fun.

I really started reading after my second child was born.  I love to read because it lets me imagine.  I think imagination is a divine attribute.

What’s your favorite thing about blogging?

I like when a photograph turns out really well, and especially when it looks nice with the layout on my blog.  I also love funny comments, and finding funny blogs out there.

What do you hope people get from your blog?

Hm, I hope they can come and find inspiration, whether it’s finding a recipe for their kid’s next birthday party, or an idea on how to broaden their own intellect with a great book.

How do you stay creative in your daily life?

When I write or cook,  I listen to music.  That helps me stay on the right side of the brain.

What does creativity mean to you?

I have always equated creativity with originality — doing something that is uniquely mine.  What is the point otherwise?   It’s hard, though, to come up with something new–to stare at that blank computer screen and write a new scene in my book, or come up with a new food combination that no one else has ever thought of (which is rare, by the way).

How would you describe your style of creativity?

I am more conservative than cool.  Definitely.  I was never one of those girls who knew who she was from the time she was twelve, and had style flowing from her fingertips.  I was always the girl who looked to my older brother or sister to figure out what was cool.  I am still trying to find my own style, my own sense of what I like.

What’s something readers would be surprised to learn about you?

I can recite the alphabet backwards very quickly, and I can make saliva bubbles float off my tongue.  Gross.

applecrisp

What’s your favorite dessert?

Apple crisp.  That stuff is addictive.  If it sits out on the counter and no one else is eating it, I will literally make up excuses as to why I can keep tasting it.  I’ll do that until half the pan is gone.  Then I’ll finish the rest of it the next day.  It’s not safe around me.

If you could go anywhere with anyone, where would you go and what would you do?

I would go back to England with my friend Julie, and this time, I would drive.  We went there a couple summers ago, and I had the most wonderful time.  It felt like home to me.

And I’d want to go to Prince Edward Island with Brooke from conversationswithacupcake.  We could recite Anne of Green Gables lines the whole time we are there.

Favorite book?

War and Peace by Tolstoy because it’s long and the characters are so real and unpredictable.  My other favorite book is probably Breaking Dawn, the last in the Twilight series.  I don’t know what it is about that book, but it speaks to me on deep levels that I can’t really pinpoint.  Or maybe I just wish I could be a superhero like Bella.

Favorite movie?

Nicholas Nickleby with Charlie Hunnam and Prince Caspian. Oh, and About a Boy. That one makes me laugh hysterically.

Hm.  Guess I have a thing for British actors.

What do you strive for?

Same things as most people, I guess — a better life for my kids.

And transcendence — a connection, a feeling that the world will somehow be a better place because I was here.

Oh, and better posture.

How did you come up with Sophsti-mom?

You know, trying to com up with a .com these days is so hard.  One that ends with “mom”  is even harder.  I knew I wanted to have a site where providing a great life for your kids, education, and food all sort of came together.

When I was scouting around for inspiration, I found this little entertaining binder with this girl holding a birthday cake (one of “The Girls” by The T Company).  I thought, That is what I want to portray.  What does she look like?  She looks sophisticated.  Then I thought, Sophisticated!!!!  That’s it!  Sophistimom!!!!  The “well-read, well-bred, well-fed” thing came from an equally generous heavenly muse the same night.  I was so giddy it all came together like that.

Shoes or jewelry?

Jewelry.  Definitely.  Ever since my feet grew from having babies, I stopped being a shoe person.  I haven’t forgiven my feet.  Plus, when are these 3 inch heels ever going to go out of fashion?  I keep waiting.  One or two inches is all I can handle.
