The Blond Duck goes to a Snake Farm

Posted on June 9th, 2009 in Stories

Most people go to an elegant restaurant for their anniversary.  They slip into dresses hidden in the closet for only a few special nights a year, dab their most elegant perfume behind their ears and spend a sophisticated night at a dusky bistro dancing to jazz and dining on lobster.

Clad in my best flip flops and sundress, Ben and I headed out one Sunday morning to a roadside snake farm off the Interstate.  Ben had been dying to see it ever since it had been featured on Dirty Jobs.

Now, I don’t like snakes.  In fact, I despise snakes.  No decent Texas girl is going to like snakes.   In my duckie mind, the only good snake is a dead one.  Preferably far away from me.

And I HATE alligators with every fiber of my being.  I have nightmares about once a week about alligators eating either me or the Babies or Ben.

dsc05869

Of course, the snake farm has alligators.  Lots of alligators.  Much bigger than this one.

I was not amused.

dsc05848

So I concentrated on the cuter aspects of the Snake Farm, such as the Petting Zoo.

dsc058661

I tried to make friends with the baby pigs…

dsc05865

But they just ran away.

dsc05862

So I hung out with the goats instead.  They appreciated me.  And the bag of food leaking in my purse.

dsc05864

Meanwhile, Ben had a new friend.

dsc05857

A very determined new little friend.

dsc05852

With every step Ben took, his new friend rammed him with a forceful head butt.  He rammed the back of his legs, he rammed his shins.  He rammed his stomach, he rammed his butt.  He rammed every inch of Ben he could find.  He was an unstoppable ramming machine.

dsc05861

He even rammed his toes.

dsc058561

Meanwhile, the other animals had decided Ben was their friend as well.

dsc05858

For you see, he was the One With The Food Bag.  That automatically made him the most popular fellow at the petting zoo.

dsc05873

Even the peacock liked him.

dsc05881

The snake found him a delightful companion.

dsc05875

Even the mournful llama loved him.

dsc05879

We had a wonderful time at the snake farm with all our new friends.  Except for the snakes.  And the alligators.

I can only imagine what we’ll be doing for our fourth year anniversary.

Stay tuned, Invisible Friends!  Tomorrow we have a new Coconut Queen and Thursday, a wonderful new recipe!  Friday we’ve got a new Twirl and Saturday, a new Critter Confessions!  Stay tuned!

Happy Anniversary!! I have a friend (had a friend, in Florida) who raised “wild” animals to take to different events and he’d set up a booth so people could “pet” his animals…He had a (a few) Snake that weighed a couple hundred pounds and was about 10 ft. or so long….I too felt the same way as he was putting it acorss my shoulders to have me carry it around to advertise his booth for him…lol….They’re not that bad really. I was wearing flip flops too!!! lol….Gotta live dangerously every now and again, ya know?

Now that is what I call true love … going to the snake farm just because you knew it would make your guy a happy camper. He does look happy, too, even with his little head-butting friend asserting itself at every turn! This will be hard to top next year; I hope you don’t do any arachnid type thing! What did the Babies think of your outing … did they detect any non-Pond creature scents on your person? Speaking of your person, you look darling in that red sundress!

  38. Amy Says:

I’ve gotta say, you just have the best smile!

  48. Russ Says:

I have been to the Snake Farm & Animal World Zoo and I have seen the Dirty Jobs show. That place is so much fun for seeing things even big city zoos don’t have. I can’t wait until I am in Texas again to go there again. Happy Anniversary! You looked great holding the snake, by the way!

  49. Cathy Says:

Happy Anniversary! You are a brave soul. I really really can’t stand snakes. I won’t even take my poor kids into the snake house at the zoo. The goats are pretty cute, though!

  61. Andrea Says:

I got chills just looking at the picture of the snake!

  62. Katherine Says:

You are one brave lady. I would never have the gumption to touch a snake or a gator.

  63. Kiki Says:

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Enjoyed your pictures of your adventure at the snake farm. We visited a gator farm in Fl last fall. There is a photo of my son on my blog holding a baby gator. He was so brave. Both me and hubby couldn’t do it. We just stroked it’s head. We didn’t hold any snakes though. Hubby has a deep seeded fear of them. He would have run screaming, just like when he get the occasional snake in our yard. Cut to me having to deal with it, like a man. Take care.

  64. The Fat Dietitian Says:

Happy Anniversary! You look too cute holding the snake, I would look panic stricken… I adore pigs and goats. :)

  65. Kara-Noel Says:

LOL!! We used to watch dirty jobs when we had TV! I remember the snake farm.
    Looks like a great trip.
Eli looked at the picture of you and the snake and said “I like snakes a lot… yep… a lot!!” Except his “a lot” sounds like “a-wat” which makes it even cuter!!

  66. Erica Says:

hahahahha you guys crack me up! Happy Anniversary

  67. Sara Says:

This looks like fun! I actually used to keep reptiles as pets, I had two leopard geckos!

  68. melissa Says:

hope you had a good day on your aniversary and its fun being different so….

  69. Rachel (S[d]OC) Says:

Happy anniversary. I remember holding a snake as a kid and being cooler with it than I thought I would be.

You seem to feel about alligators the way I feel about crabs!

I envy you having access to a petting zoo. Everywhere I go in this area none of the “petting zoos” actually allow petting. Animals are house behind double rows of fencing and you have to feed them through tubes if they let you feed them at all. They’re really just zoos with farm animals.

  70. dawn (bee and rose) Says:

    Happy Belated Anniversary!

Wow! Catherine just petted a few snakes at the zoo this morning and I was ready to throw up! lol! You are brave!

  71. Ally Says:

Happy Anniversary!! I hate snakes. And alligators. Ick! Love the perring zoo! After a big rain storm a few weeks ago, I went running on the trail near my house–which is by a lake, mind you. And it was early so I was basically alone and I swear I was petrified that an alligator was going to come crawling out of the creek!! Not kidding. I never saw one, but, I tell you, it was the most terrifying run of my life.

  72. Lori Says:

Happy Annniversary. That sure is an original date!

  73. Pumpkin Says:

I’m sort of neutral on snakes- as long as they aren’t poisonous or in the house, I don’t mind them much. Kyle on the other hand, loathes them. Like super-hates them. I feel the same way about cockroaches, so Kyle is the offical cockroach-killer/disposer. Guess that makes me the snake-disposer? Luckily, no snakes have ever gotten in the apartment, so this issue hasn’t come up yet… knock on wood.

  74. Whitney Says:

I think I’m more comfortable with the furry animals than the scaly ones… It looks like you had a great time! :)
