Green Pepper Swiss Steak

Like a coconut, green pepper swiss steak isn’t pretty.
But it sure is tasty.

At first glance, green pepper swiss steak looks like a big pile of brown mush.

In fact, it’s terrifyingly reminiscent of the lunch mush the well-meaning lunch room ladies would serve up.

But, much like sloppy joes, chili, cheesy-beef-pasta-or-rice mixtures, potato salad and coleslaw, green swiss pepper steak is mighty tasty.
The beef is tender, with just a hint of kick. Even you Northerners can stomach it, I promise. Plus, the recipe came from my Lone Star Legacy II Austin Junior League cookbook. And you know Junior Leagues have the best cookbooks.

Trust me. It’s tasty.
Green Pepper Swiss Steak
2 lbs. tenderized round steak
flour
2 tblspns oil
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped bell pepper
1 cup chopped celery
1 1/2 vegetable cocktail juice
1 beef bullion cube
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
2 tblspns cornstarch
1/4 cup flour
Cut meat in serving size pieces. Dip in flour and brown well in a large skillet in 2 tblspns oil. Add remaining ingredients, except cornstarch and water. Cover and simmer until meat is tender, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours. * Thicken gravy with cornstarch water mixture. Serves 6 to 8.
* I let mine cook about double the time because Ben likes extra tender meat.
Stay tuned, Invisible Friends! Tomorrow we have a new Twirl and Saturday, a new Critter Confession! Stay tuned!

July 9th, 2009 at 4:14 am
There is something to be said for the dishes that came out of the 50′s. It may not be the prettiest…but it’s homecooking at it’s finest! I’m sure it was yummy.
July 9th, 2009 at 4:17 am
I love a good Swiss steak too!
July 9th, 2009 at 4:30 am

July 9th, 2009 at 4:47 am
Yeah, I’ve always thought it was a bit messy to look at. I’ve had a version of it once or twice and it was great, but have never tried making it myself. Maybe I will.
July 9th, 2009 at 4:49 am
I’d give it a whirl!
July 9th, 2009 at 5:11 am
as my dad would say, “looks like someone already ate it,” but darn it if half of the stuff that falls into that bracket isn’t amazing!

First of all, a coconut is quite pretty! However, you’re right about that steak, that’s pretty ugly.
July 9th, 2009 at 5:44 am
I’ll stick with the pie…LOL!
July 9th, 2009 at 5:51 am
Sounds really tasty my dear. What is vegetable cocktail juice? l never heard this before.
July 9th, 2009 at 6:12 am
Yum! I don’t care how ugly that steak is, it sounds delicious!
July 9th, 2009 at 6:16 am

I swear lady, you have and post the best recipes. It’s like you read my mind or something you genius you!
July 9th, 2009 at 8:59 am
That does sound tasty! It’s true, some dishes just don’t photograph as well as they taste.
July 9th, 2009 at 9:34 am
I will be making this soon!
July 9th, 2009 at 9:38 am
Junior Leagues truly do have the best cookbooks. I’d definitely test drive this recipe, except that the AH & I both have a severe aversion to peppers. Looks delicious, though!
July 9th, 2009 at 9:44 am
The less pretty foods are always the best foods, except when dished up by cafeteria ladies.
July 9th, 2009 at 10:00 am
It looks like it came out very tender. Great recipe!
July 9th, 2009 at 10:00 am
Hey — some of the best food I know is UGLY food. I’m half convinced that ugly food tastes better than pretty food
The flavors here sound just fantastic. Seems the Texas JL cookbooks are the best around…
July 9th, 2009 at 10:30 am
Beef and brown gravy just are not photogenic but we all know how wonderfully they taste and smell! This is a winner for sure!
July 9th, 2009 at 11:51 am
Looks tasty to me!!! Who cares how it looks if it makes your mouth and tummy happy.
July 9th, 2009 at 12:34 pm
Sometimes the best food isn’t pretty!
July 9th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
That actually looks tasty to me! i’m a huge swiss stake fan!!!
July 9th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
You don’t need to convince me. My mom’s earthquake cake looked like a train wreck but tasted delicious! I’m sure it’s the same deal with the steak.
July 9th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
When I first saw it, I thought it was Chinese food.
Thanks so much for posting at my blog, I added your link to my blog.
**hugs

Oh man, I haven’t had swiss steak a long time. As soon as I saw your title, I immediately began to salivate! I love swiss steak with peppers. It ranks up there in the comfort food category! The lick your plate clean category! The can I have seconds and thirds category! YUM! Your recipe is wonderful, and not too complicated either. You know, I’m a cookbook-aholic. I think I may need to get me one of those Junior League books!
July 9th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
Wow I havent had that since I was a KID! I love it and cant wait to make it!
July 9th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
It’s hard to make steak and gravy look good! I bet this is delicious! You have the most interesting cookbooks! And yes, I think tuna as a substitute in the shrimp cakes would work fine.
July 9th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
I’m with Linda on this. Us NORTHERNERS can handle anything:) Swiss Steak has been around since the 1920s although, it didn’t get popular until the forties as a way of stretching the dollar and beef; postwar. According to John Mariani in his book The Dictionary of American Food & Drink, the title Swiss Steak has roots in the term swissing, a method of rolling and pounding cloth flat. Some food historians believe Swiss Steak may have originated with the Pennsylvania Dutch.
IMHO, duckie, your recipe is just perfect for the slow cooker. Like Ben, I like mine extra tender. I love the addition of the vegetable cocktail juice (I’m guessing something like V8) Yes, yes, definitely good for the crockpot especially since we can’t seem to hold any sunshine here in New York. Comfort food at it’s BEST! Thank you so much for sharing…Yours looks just as it should; dunkable!!!
July 9th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
My Mom used to make this every week! But your recipe is slightly different. I’ll have to give it a try!
July 9th, 2009 at 6:30 pm
What a purdy lay out! Whew!
And YUM!
July 9th, 2009 at 7:24 pm
I love swiss steak!!! Sometimes the ugliest food is the best:) BTW I don’t think your steak looks ugly I think it looks tasty.
July 9th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
It’s surely tasty but, as for me, I don’t like green pepper!!
July 9th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
Hi! Thank you for the comment. You are the one got featured in SITS, right?!?! That’s really cool!
I think I’ll try this one, hope it will taste good too if I try pork instead of beef.
Many home-made Chinese dishes (my-home-made) don’t look good, but they are scrummy!!!
Best,
Fran

July 10th, 2009 at 10:07 am
I’m actually salivating! I’ve never met a Junior League recipe that I didn’t like!
July 10th, 2009 at 11:06 am
I personally think most of Chinese food is pretty brown and ugly, but oh so delicious. Fill my plate up please.
July 10th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
I have ate many an ugly dish that tastes great. This one sounds very yummy.
July 10th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Okay, my mouth is watering!
July 10th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
It sounds delish. Let’s face it, most dinners don’t look pretty, and the ones rthat do in restaurants – hmm are often not very satisfying – all style over substance. I’d come to dinner if this was being served
July 10th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
It does sound and look good to me! Your really have a gift of conveying your love of food to us all. Every recipe you post makes me hungry and want to try it. I think you should publish a really fun cookbook complete with animals in tierras.
I promise you I would buy it.
Have a wonderful weekend. ~Melissa

My mother swears by the Junior League Cookbooks. I love anything that resembles in the slightest way Sloppy Joe, Sloppy Sloppy Joe. Yummy!
July 10th, 2009 at 7:08 pm
Yum!
Have you tried tossing it in the slow cooker?
I love my crock pot, and like Ben, I like super tender meat, too.
Yay for the Junior League cookbooks!
I also adore vintage church cookbooks.
July 10th, 2009 at 11:10 pm
Put a sprig of basil on top to make it “prettier”… that’s my fix for dinners that don’t look good. My meatloaf wasn’t very photogenic either, but boy is it yummy! I’ll have to try your beef recipe sometime. Looks yummy! Thanx for stopping by my blog today! Have a great day!
July 12th, 2009 at 10:56 am
yeah, it’s not gonna win any beauty contests, but that definitely doesn’t mean i wouldn’t scarf it down. great recipe, miranda–i haven’t had pepper steak in a long time!
July 13th, 2009 at 2:28 am
My husband would like this.

Hey this is somewhat of off topic but I was wondering if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML. I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding know-how so I wanted to get guidance from someone with experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
