Blooms of Sweetness
Once upon a time, before the Midsummer’s Night Dream Ball ever occurred, a tiny creature came to the Pond. With wings that glimmered like crystal but were thinner than a rose petal and tendrils of ice colored hair, she arrived late one evening long after all the creatures were asleep. Trying not to giggle at the Blond Duck’s snores, she crept into the kitchen.

“Excuse me,” a tiny creature snarled, her crown perched on her head at a alarming angle, “Who are you?”
“Who are you?” the fairy countered, her words like faint tinkling bells. “Are you a rabbit? Or perhaps you’re one of those strange Egyptian cats…”
Queen Bitty gathered up all of her 4 lb. strength and glared at the fairy. A low growl sounded in her throat. “I am Queen Bitty, ruler of the Pond. And I am a Chihuahua. What I may lack in size, I don’t in my bite, I assure you.”
The fairy curtsied, bowing her head so Queen Bitty wouldn’t see her grin. “My apologies, Highness. As you can see, I am but a humble traveling fairy in need of nourishment.”

“What kind of nourishment?” Queen Bitty demanded, her eyes narrowing.
“Anything,” the fairy hastened to reassure her. “But I would adore something with a bit of sweetness.”

Queen Bitty, who had quite a sweet tooth herself, nodded. “How about some Blooms of Sweetness?”

“Blooms of Sweetness?” The fairy shook her head. “I’m afraid I’m not familiar.”
Queen Bitty smirked. “You see, we have plenty of these from the Midsummer’s Night Dream Ball two nights ago.”
“Leftovers?” the fairy asked, unable to hide her disappointment.

“Nope.” Queen Bitty shook her head. “Once a single batch of Blooms of Sweetness has been made, they bloom for at least three months. Every time you eat one, another one appears.”
The fairy’s eyes lit up. “How does that work?”

“You see, you assemble the pastry flowers and fill it with a bit of sweetness–pudding, jam, jelly, ice cream, whatever you choose. Once the first three are created, you’ve made a single batch. From then on, the flowers will keep blooming with the chosen sweetness for up to three months!”

“That’s brilliant!” the fairy cried. “Where did you ever find these?”
Queen Bitty shrugged. “They just appeared one day*,” she replied. “Would you like one?”

“Please!” the fairy cried, her mouth watering. “That would be lovely!”
So with a cup of raspberry tea and a jar of honey for the fairy (who, it turns out, liked a lot more than a bit of sweetness,) Queen Bitty and the fairy had a midnight tea party.

It was quite sweet.
Literally.
* Invisible Friends, my mom bought these for me at World Market. However, their site no longer shows them and I don’t have the name of the company. They come in a packaged as precooked flowers you assemble, like cookies. If anyone knows the name, I’d be delighted to know so I could tell you!
Stay tuned, Invisible Friends! Tomorrow we have a new Twirl, then a new Creative Woman of the Pond Saturday! And next week, more delightful whimsy!

Cat says: “I love you and I want to make Blooms of Sweetness today! Tell Queen Bitty thank you! And I love her. And Bear.”
We just purchased flower shaped cookie cutters from Crate and Barrel that will be perfect for this recipe!! Cat is determined to use strawberry and mint chocolate chip ice cream to make them!

Waitaminit…I was expecting to see a recipe at the end! Did that magically disappear too?
Coincidentally, I was thinking last night that I need to write a post about the things I still need to catch up on – 4 weeks after returning home from vacation…yeah, I’m pathetic – and one of them is reading your stories! Would you believe I still haven’t gotten completely caught up with all my emails yet. *sigh*
But, anyway, I’ve pulled up the stories (so I have no excuse when I am sitting at my computer), and I can’t wait to read them today (after harvesting the edamame and tomatoes…the fun never ends with a large garden)!

I’m so very glad these don’t exist in the real world. I would love to eat them but my will power is non existant. LOL Just curious. Have you seen Hotel for Dogs? Saw it today with Yaya and I cried the entire way through. Happy and sad tears.
August 13th, 2009 at 5:43 pm

August 13th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
Nice the empty one!
It’s hot here, this year August is hotter than July, there is a lot of humidity that makes the heat really oppressive: I drink a lot of sparkling mineral water (perhaps sparkling white wine would be better!)
August 13th, 2009 at 7:27 pm
