Critter Confessions from the Land of the Flowered Bed

Hello.  My name is Pumble the Bee, and I’m from the Land of the Flowered Bed, a world of enchanted stuffed toys and creatures that live in a little girl’s bedroom. There’ll be a book about us soon, so you can read all about us.

In fact, you may have seen me at the ball...

But the real reason I’m here is simple.  I have a confession.

A secret I have carried for years.

I’ve buried it within my heart, hidden it deep in the folds of my soul and pushed it to the darkest parts of my mind.

But it’s time.  Time to reveal this dreadful secret.

This is the scariest thing I’ve ever done.

Here goes:  I, Pumble the Bumblebee, am afraid of heights.

That’s right.  I’m a bee who is scared of heights.

While all the other bees are zipping over fields of flowers, flying high above houses and weaving between flocks of birds…

I’m down on the ground, preferably doing something like baking or walking to an ice cream shop…

Did I mention I have a sweet tooth?  It’s a bee thing.

Anyway, the mere mention of flying breaks me out in hives.  And not the good kind.  My hands shake, my wings tremble and I lose my appetite.  It’s terrible, absolutely horrible.

And it’s not like I had some great dramatic fall from the sky or brush with depth.  I’ve just always been terrified of heights, ever since I was a tiny bee first stepping out of the hive I was raised in.

But, there’s a silver lining to every cloud.

For you see, being the stout bee that I am (though, it’s not my fault.  As a pastry chef at the Pond, I’m forced to create delectable goodies like biscuits and pumpkin bread and pies and honeycakes and cookies and ice cream….and I simply must make sure they’re acceptable for consumption.)

Burp.  Excuse me.  What was I talking about?  I get a bit forgetful when someone mentions honeycakes…

Oh yes.   Being the stout bee I am, you see, I can’t really fly at all.  Not very high, anyway.

Which suits me just fine.

Now, let’s talk about more pleasant things.  Who would like some honeycakes?

Its okay Mr. Pumble, I can’t fly either. something about weight distribution, and not enough wings. I think baked goods are better than flying anyway. May I have a spot of tea with my honeycake please?, Thank you. Good day Mr. Pumble!

  32. Yaya Says:

So just how do you come up with the creature names?

  33. Heatherlyn Says:

The first day of school went well enough. My daughter who is in 2nd grade has always had a bit of anxiety about having real friends. The kids her age seem to be very clickish and demanding. She’d like someone who is more like she is (more compromising) and she hasn’t had any luck. She’s shy and gets social anxiety. This year, again, there are no girls in her class that she’s had in any of her classes before and they are all friends with each other. But she got the teacher she likes and she’s happy about that! The 1st grader is far more easy going and my 6th grader is more easy going too. Although it seems like the first few days of school it is largely wasted time as far as learning goes.
