A Lunchbox Playdate

A few weeks ago, my lunchbox confessed to being jealous of her twin sister.

It wasn’t pretty.

It got so bad to where the lunchboxes did nothing but argue.  Day and night, for hours and hours, they bickered and snipped and snapped at each other.

“You’re a lazy piece of tin!”  one lunchbox would snap.

“You’re just jealous because I have a pretty cover that’s not covered in scratches!” the other princess lunchbox would snap back.

“Worthless piece of clutter!”

“Outdated old maid!”

“Your clasp doesn’t work!”

“Your handle is faulty!”

“You smell like a bologna sandwich!”

“You’ve never even seen a bologna sandwich!”

It got so bad that none of the other creatures wanted to be around them.  The Love Pig scurried of to the Land of the Flowered Bed….

The Kitchen Fairy tried a stint as a Bathroom Fairy, which wasn’t delightful at all….

and the kitchen ducks were forced to give up their tomatoes, invest  in earmuffs and move to another cabinet.

And then the princess lunchboxes met the Fairy Lunchbox, who resided with Hannah at Five Star Foodie.

Ever the proper lunchbox, the Fairy lunchbox invited the princess lunchboxes for tea at her enchanted kingdom.  The princess lunchboxes were thrilled.  For at least a day, they didn’t argue.  Instead, they polished and scrubbed their fronts and sides so they would look as pretty as possible.

The next day, the Flying Pigs took the princess lunchboxes to meet their new friend.

“Welcome!” the Fairy lunchbox cried, ushering them into her tiny cottage nestled in an oak tree.  “Please sit down.  I’ll get the tea and cookies.”

Awed, the lunchboxes sat quietly.   For a few moments, at least.

“How was your trip here?” the fairy lunchbox asked, as she brought Blooms of Sweetness and honey tea to the table.

“It was lovely,” the first  princess lunchbox said.

“Except for the part where the troll wanted to eat us,” the second lunchbox grumbled.

“That’s because you were singing so loud the Flying Pigs got a headache,” the first lunchbox snapped.

“Only to drown out your insufferable snoring!” the second lunchbox hissed.  “You sound like a warthog with a cold!”

“Some of us work for a living,” the first lunchbox retorted.

“Oh, and I’m just a kept lunchbox only good for looking pretty?” the second lunchbox cried, wounded.

“I call them like I see them,” the first lunchbox snapped.

“You’re just jealous because I don’t smell like turkey burgers!”

“I’d rather smell like turkey burgers than you!”

“You are a turkey!”

“You’re a tinhead!”

“Ladies, ladies,” the Fairy lunchbox cried.  “Do you always argue like this?”

“She started it,” the lunchboxes muttered in unison.

0905092231

“Ladies, let me tell you a story,” the Fairy lunchbox began.  (The following speech was written by Hannah, Five Star Foodie’s daughter.)  “Once upon a time, in Pixie Hollow, there were some fairies.  Each had a different talent.  Iridessa liked to light up the fireflies and Fawn liked to take care of animals.   Tinker Bell liked to make stuff.  One day, they heard that a little girl was getting ready to go to school for the very first time.   So, they decided to make her a very special lunchbox.  Fawn gathered all the animals to help the different materials.   Tinker Bell put it all together and made a lunchbox shape.   Then, Iridessa used her light wand to paint a pretty picture of flowers, and butterflies and fairy portraits.

At night, when everyone was sleeping, the fairies flew to Wegmans and placed the special lunchbox on a shelf.   Saturday morning, the little girl came with her mommy and daddy for her usual pastry breakfast and found the fairy lunchbox!   The fairy lunch box was so happy to come home with her new friend!

Now, the fairy lunchbox gets to go to school every day.  But sometimes when the little girl is too busy with her friends and her school day, the fairy lunch box feels a little lonely.  She wants a lunchbox friend.”

“So you see ladies,” the fairy lunchbox summed up.  “You should feel happy to have each other.  You could be lonely like me.”

Well, the two princess lunchboxes were ashamed of themselves.  They apologized to their hostess and never argued again.

For that week, at least.

And they can’t wait for another playdate!

Stay tuned, Invisible Friends!  Tomorrow we have a new edition to our Halloween story and Thursday, a new recipe!  Then we have more Dallas Jean Lee!  Stay tuned!

I’ve got bickering at my house too, but it’s usually the kids. I see you are eating healthier – fresh tomatoes in the kitchen!

  13. Nikki Says:

What a great blog! I really like the fairy story:) My little cousin loves princesses and would just die over a lunchbox like this! :)

  14. Cafe Fashionista Says:

This reminds me of first grade. Everyday I would bring a cute lunchbox to school – My Little Pony, New Kids on the Block, Care Bears – and by the time lunch would arrive, someone had stolen it. This went on for months; finally my mom just gave me lunch money like everyone else. Too bad, those boxes could have been collector’s items by now!

And just for the record, duckies can be cute in skinny jeans – you just need the right shoes! :)

  15. Faith Says:

Really cute story! Hannah did a great job too!

  16. Barbara Says:

Wonder if my lunchboxes argued like these do? Such stuff going on inside cupboards!

  17. Kristina Says:

I definitely think I’m going to start calling more people tinheads.

  18. Megan Says:

I’m glad the pond gets to experience a week of peace – all that lunch box sniping must be very tiring. And Gerald the groundhog would love to visit the pond, he’s never been to Texas, though you have to watch him around the ladies (neigh irresistible).

  19. kelly Says:

    those darn princesses!

hey just wanted to give you fyi – my husband did this for me so i have no clue how to do it, but i am a DOT COM too and not a BLOG SPOT etc etc and he set it up so it goes right to my DOT COM from blogger. just an idea, might get you even more followers!

  20. Paula Says:

You should contact Disney! They could use you as a writer. Forget that … you could run the creative writing department! Love it! PS: Um, do you have matching thermos’s for these lovely lunch boxes? I sense another story line comin’ on! :-)

  28. Pietro Says:

    Nice story!
In these lunchboxes I can see Biancaneve, the Princess Aurora, luckily there are not the terrible witches Malefica and Grimilde of Walt Disney’s movies!

  29. Kristin Says:

    You’re the cutest!

  30. Lori Says:

Your imagination knows no limits. My girls would like both those lunchboxes.

  31. Barbara Says:

Ah Hannah! I’m not nearly interesting nor creative enough. But you are a sweet Duck in your pond and I love reading your posts!

  32. Lynn Says:

Sweet. I’m glad the lunch box princesses are getting along now.

My lunchbox was a rubbery sort of plastic. One day my mother set my lunchbox on the stove (counter too cluttered with sandwich makings), forgetting that the burner was still warm from breakfast. Yes, sadly melted, scorched lunchbox.

  33. Marjie Says:

Kids will squabble; there’s no reason why inanimate objects shouldn’t.

  34. Pam Says:

My daughter would love all three of those lunch boxes.

The tarragon sauce would be FANTASTIC with fried chicken. Actually, anything would be FANTASTIC with fried chicken. ;)

  35. Nutmeg Nanny Says:

Oh lunchboxes…can’t we all just get along:) I’m going to show this story to the little girl I nanny for…she will love it;)

  36. Louise Says:

What an enchanting story both you and Hannah have created. Simply charming. I’m going to send this post off to my daughter so she can share it with my grandkids in Idaho. I know for sure Tabi will enjoy it and Noah, well Noah loves flying pigs!!! Thank you for brightening my day Miranda…

  37. blueviolet Says:

Lunchbox arguments are quite silly and laughable!

  38. Heatherlyn Says:

Hmmm, I have some little princesses who live here who could stand to learn a lesson on being less competetive with each other and enjoying each other more!

  39. Melissa B. Says:

…and then they kissed, made up, and said, “Let’s Do Lunch!”

  40. Reeni Says:

    How cute!!!!

  41. The Rambler Says:

I want to buy a book that you write for my daughter…cause you write the best stories and she would just LOVE them to pieces.

  44. MIchelle @ One Crafty Mama Says:

Oh no, even the lunchboxes bicker! I’m not sure I could handle that. :)

  45. Cakelaw Says:

LOL – only you Duckie could invent a story about your lunchboxes – so cute.

  46. theUngourmet Says:

I just read this with my son. We loved it and now he is begging to go back and read about the Puppy Ball again! ;D

  47. marie Says:

Utterly delightful Duckie. I love your lunch boxes, even if they do bicker a lot with each other. Waiting for your e-mail and what you have to tell me!! I haven’t been too well this week. Started with the all nighter and this morning I am up and down the stairs with tummy cramps every five minutes. TMI I know!! Love you loads.
