Critter Confessions: The Wreath Owls

Hello. We’re the Wreath Owls.
I’m Hoot (peeking out shyly from the leaf on the left….)

And I’m WHO! (bellowing proudly!)
And we, the Wreath Owls, have a confession.

A terrible admission.
A stunning revelation.
A scandalous secret.
A horrid truth to be clasped to our feathery breasts, revealed only in whispers on our deathbed.
But we must share. It’s only right. It’s the only way to feel better about this ghastly admission.

Don’t you agree?

The truth is…
We hate Halloween.
We loathe it.
We despise it.
We dread it.

But the truth is…we really want to like Halloween!

We want to wear costumes and go trick or treating and and carve pumpkins and eat candy corn and bob for apples and run from spooky old women giving out apples instead of candy…
But we can’t.
Because we are Fall Wreath Owls, not Halloween Wreath Owls.

If we lived on a Halloween wreath, we could love Halloween. We could go trick or treating and carve pumpkins and eat candy corn all day long. We could frolic with spiders, chat with spirits and startle little bitty children trick or treating. It would be glorious.

Alas, we are Fall Wreath Owls. We enjoy jumping in leaf piles, piling pumpkins into wagons covered with straw, attending harvest festivals and gnawing on ears of corn. We adorn ourselves with red and golden orange leaves and drool over pumpkin pie, pumpkin cake, pumpkin bread, apple bread, apple muffins….The smell of cinnamon and rich spices fills our nostrils and we want to snuggle into a blanket and enjoy the cool air.
And as Fall Wreath Owls, we are doomed to hate the spookiness and silliness of Halloween.
But perhaps….we could visit the Halloween wreath on Halloween! And then we could be Halloween Fall Wreath Owls and still get to pig out on Thanksgiving.

This is the most brilliant thing I’ve ever thought of!

“Excuse me? I thought of it?” (Hoot is now glaring from behind the leaf.)

Oh well. No matter.
For our scandalous secret now has a delicious solution.

Candy corn and pumpkin pie for everyone!

We are hooting in glee.
Stay tuned, Invisible Friends! We have a week of joyous whimsy and frivolity coming up! More stories, more tasty recipes, more verbose critters and of course, more fun in the Pond! Stay tuned!

I have a ferret your wreath owls should talk to. Of course he’s evil so maybe not… :p

I think that your wreaths are absolutely fantastic! I love them! I wish we did more in England, but at this time of year, everyone seems to already getting ready for Christmas! Only 9 weeks to go, so I’ll have to start Christmas Shopping soon, and deciding on a colour scheme.
We traditionally have a Christmas Ball, and I didn’t have one last year because of the deaths of my parents, but I’m really looking forward to arranging one this year!
Thank you for your kind words yesterday! It’s so nice to have all these virtual friends, and I love you all so much!

Hoot and Who are so lovely, I wish they lived at the pond year-round!
October 10th, 2009 at 7:31 am
I would really love to take Hoot and Who home with me; despite the fact that they willingly admit to loathing Halloween!
October 10th, 2009 at 8:01 am
I always find the most lovely creatures at the pond!

Ducky you are a hoot!
What adorable little owls. I want to kiss them

They definitely need to partake in Halloween!

I think hoot and who can change wreaths for any season and get along just fine. Give them a break!

October 10th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
So cute!! That makes me sad that they don’t like Halloween. But what a great idea!! I can’t wait until they visit the Halloween wreath!
October 10th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
You are so stinkin’ creative lady. Can you send some of that my way?
October 10th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
Nice post! I like the picture of Halloween!
October 11th, 2009 at 4:26 am
i’m fairly certain i could eat my weight in candy corn. that’s neither here nor there, but i thought you should know.
October 11th, 2009 at 6:26 am
what a cute wreath, both of them!
October 11th, 2009 at 6:45 am
Candy corn… nobody likes it much, but everybody eats it!
October 11th, 2009 at 7:15 am
I’m with Hoot and Who. I love autumn but I’m not too big on spookiness and all of that jazz.
October 11th, 2009 at 7:19 am
Cute! I used to make my own wreath (sans the owl).
October 11th, 2009 at 10:52 am
That’s okay wreath owls, I had a wreath Tigger that had the same issue. However, we solved the problem by making a two-sided wreath. One side was Tigger enjoying a Fall scene and the other was Tigger enjoying a Halloween scene. So you see there is hope for your dilemma.

I just adore pumpkin pie – always have – it’s the only kind my mother ever made. One pie per year. Therefore, i also love candy corn, although that also has limitations in availability. I vote with your owls.

Love your Halloween wreath Duckie and I love Halloween, something they don’t do very well over here. I also love Candy Corn, something else they dont’ do at all over here. I miss it. Mind you, my hips don’t really need it do they? Love you loads!
October 12th, 2009 at 7:56 am
I love those little owls. I think their solution is perfect!
October 12th, 2009 at 8:00 am
How cute!

My Halloween wreath has a spooooooky raven on it- my “fall” wreath is just leaves and ribbon. Halloween is a much beloved holiday at our house- in fact, a good amount of Halloween decor stays out year round here! (Halloween dish towels, a ghost-print fleece throw, a pumpkin cookie jar, not to mention our Halloween “babies”, Spooky the ghost and Orson the vampire bear!)

The best solutions always involve food.
