When you give a Ben a cookie…

When you give a Ben a cookie,

He’s going to want it to be a chocolate chip cookie.

And not just any chocolate chip cookie.

If you give a Ben a cookie, it’s got to be a chewy, tasty, soft but not gooey chocolate chip cookie.

Because if not, he’ll want to make his own cookies. The perfect chocolate cookies.

(Secret confession: Ben is actually a better baker than the Blond Duck!)

(Second secret confession: He even makes me my own peanut butter chip cookies, since I’m allergic to chocolate! Isn’t he swell?)

And when Ben bakes his cookies,
He’ll want a glass of milk and a nap.

And when Ben curls up, lost in his own chocolate chip cookie dreams…

The cookie stealing bunny comes for his share.

He likes chocolate chip cookies too, you know. It’s his favorite.
Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies from Alton Brown on the Food Network
Ingredients
* 2 sticks unsalted butter
* 2 1/4 cups bread flour
* 1 teaspoon kosher salt
* 1 teaspoon baking soda
* 1/4 cup sugar
* 1 1/4 cups brown sugar
* 1 egg
* 1 egg yolk
* 2 tablespoons milk
* 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
* 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
Hardware:
* Ice cream scooper (#20 disher, to be exact)
* Parchment paper
* Baking sheets
* Mixer
Directions:
Heat oven to 375 degrees F.
Melt the butter in a heavy-bottom medium saucepan over low heat. Sift together the flour, salt, and baking soda and set aside.
Pour the melted butter in the mixer’s work bowl. Add the sugar and brown sugar. Cream the butter and sugars on medium speed. Add the egg, yolk, 2 tablespoons milk and vanilla extract and mix until well combined. Slowly incorporate the flour mixture until thoroughly combined. Stir in the chocolate chips.
Chill the dough, then scoop onto parchment-lined baking sheets, 6 cookies per sheet. Bake for 14 minutes or until golden brown, checking the cookies after 5 minutes. Rotate the baking sheet for even browning. Cool completely and store in an airtight container.

Don’t forget to leave some for the cookie stealing bunny.
Stay tuned, Invisible Friends! Tomorrow we’ve got a new Dallas Jean Lee and Saturday, a new critter confessions! Stay tuned!

Most all my sons love to cook (one is destined to be the griller, definitely not the baker). One son makes the yummies white chocolate chip with cranberries cookies. They are so yum, but the little guys don’t like them–their taste buds haven’t developed yet:)
October 8th, 2009 at 2:56 am
Aren’t you the lucky one? A husband who will bake just for you!
And which cookies does the bunny like best?
October 8th, 2009 at 3:08 am
As soon as we have an oven again i’m baking choco chip cookies!! The chewy ones are so, so, so far superior too.
October 8th, 2009 at 3:29 am
These cookies sure do look delicious. I feel like sitting in bed with a warm glass of milk, a plate of cookies, and a good book! Hmmm. I could eat dozen.
Thank you so much for the tip on seasickness. I’ll have to look into some OTC medicine and maybe buy some ginger pills as well. I’m desperate for anything that will remedy the sickness in cause I do head out to sea again. I hope you’re having a good week.

A friend of mine is lactose intolerant, so I’m always looking for recipes that don’t contain milk or dairy products.
I’m always on the look out for things that won’t make him ill, and that is pretty hard since just about everything has some sort of milk or butter in them!
October 8th, 2009 at 4:29 am
When you give a kid a cookie she will bounce off the walls, dancing in the living room and singing at the top of her lungs. I speak here of my children.
Hmm cookies, who can resist.
October 8th, 2009 at 4:40 am

October 8th, 2009 at 4:46 am
Yum! Don’t let a friendly looking mouse in, he’s going to want a cookie AND a glass of milk.
October 8th, 2009 at 5:18 am
You are soooo funny, chickee! Hubby likes those cookies like that also, but I don’t bake anymore because it all settles in my “bottom”!!
xoxo,
Connie

October 8th, 2009 at 9:12 am
Yeah! I think you should illustrate this just like the “If You Give a Mouse…” books! A cartoon Ben and Queen Bitty would be fantastic!

October 8th, 2009 at 9:49 am
I love to bake…but choc chips cookies (my moms recipe) are still one of my favorites. YUM. These looked great.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:05 am
LOL, okay that was super cute!
How do I choose the books I review? I look for one’s that I feel fit me and what I would want my family to read. Cuts out a lot of books, but that’s okay:)
October 8th, 2009 at 10:15 am
I have definitely before seen a man staring longingly into an oven, but I have never, ever seen a bunny stealing a cookie! I love that shot! What a great pet!
October 8th, 2009 at 10:24 am
I don’t know…this Ben you keep talking about sure sounds like a keeper to me
He makes you cookies? A definite keeper. I wouldn’t let him out alone. Remember the Scarlet A. Let’s get him a few tea shirts with a huge M for married on the back. Have a good day my friend.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:39 am
What a sweet hubby! And that cookie-stealing bunny is too cute!

. There are few things as fab as a fresh and fatty cookie. Thats a lovely hubby you have to make you some!
October 8th, 2009 at 11:40 am
I think these cookies look and sound perfect. I can only eat cookies with ice cold milk – it’s the best combination.
October 8th, 2009 at 12:01 pm

October 8th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
Thanks for stopping by! I divide all cookie lovers (and who isn’t) into soft and chewy…or hard and crunchy. I’m the former, so will give these a try.
October 8th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
I love the picture of Ben and the two dogs all snuggled up.
October 8th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
I adore Alton Brown and your cookie-stealing bunny! Oh great, now I need to go make cookies tomorrow. I guess I need to follow your example and twirl while I’m eating them (or my waist-line won’t let me come back to your blog). LOL!
October 8th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
Chocolate Chip cookies are my favorites! A nap with a full belly is another of my favs.
October 8th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
That bunny sure gets around!! Ben is so sweet for making you cookies! What cute pictures!
October 8th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
It’s so cute that Ben bakes! Kyle is terrified of baking, which you would think he would be good at, being a scientist and all! It’s very sweet that he makes you cookies you can eat.
I’ve been meaning to get back to you- I agree that our ocean babies need a virtual playdate. We should arrange one!
October 8th, 2009 at 5:50 pm
YUM! I love If You Give A Mouse a Cookie too.
Around here, my fella cooks and I bake. Which makes him the entree and me the dessert
October 8th, 2009 at 6:42 pm
So cute! The cookies look scrumptious!
October 8th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
Awww Ben is such a great baker…what a good husband!
October 8th, 2009 at 9:44 pm
Oh, this reminds me of the book, “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie”! I read your post with the same rhythm to which I read the book! And I’ve got to say that true love definitely reigns in your household … he bakes you cookies! Your very own ones, too! Bummer about the chocolate, but true love is way, way, WAY better. So if Ben is dreaming about Duckie and cookies while he sleeps, what are Bear and Queen Bitty dreaming about?
October 8th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
awesome!!! except, now I want cookies!!!
October 8th, 2009 at 11:01 pm
I never knew there were husbands who will bake for their wives. Am I living in a fairy tale?! Wow!
October 8th, 2009 at 11:28 pm
Wow, he is a better baker than you Duckie? Surely not!
October 9th, 2009 at 5:03 am
I love that picture of Ben and the sleepy puppies
October 9th, 2009 at 6:31 am
Oh sugar, I didn’t realize you were allergic to chocolate. If you weren’t you’d LOVE what I posted today. I’d switch with you if I could because I am not a huge chocolate eater.
October 9th, 2009 at 6:42 am
Allergic to Chocolate? =( Oh no!
I love the nap picture. Too Cute!
October 9th, 2009 at 7:11 am

October 9th, 2009 at 7:14 am
Just trying agin to add my two bits worth……….Alton’s cookies are the best!!!
October 9th, 2009 at 7:33 am
I’m with Ben on the chewy CC cookies! I do not like hard ones – that is all my MIL makes – I keep telling her she is stirring her batter too much!
October 9th, 2009 at 9:28 am
That was so cute and now I want cookies.
October 9th, 2009 at 9:55 am
I have been thinking for days about making choc. chip cookies. thanks for the recipe!
October 9th, 2009 at 10:04 am
Those look fantastic!!
October 9th, 2009 at 11:56 am
Hubby could give Ben a run for his money in the cookie department. He makes THE most amazing cookies (soft and hard and chewy and crunchy all at the same time) in the world!
the secret ingredient and preparation method?
If I told you – it wouldn’t be a secret , now – would it?
October 9th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
Oh my gosh, this is great! I love how he is peering in the oven watching them bake. Bahahahahahaha!
Thanks for stopping by my blog today. I love new visitors, especially ones who comment!
October 9th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
I could sooooo go for some of those cookies right now!
October 9th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
It’s difficult to decide who is cuter…Ben, or the Bunny. Ben gets big points for baking cookies for the Duck, but that Bunny has a certain charm. It’s just too close to call!
Thank you for the recipe, we’re thinking the milk might be the secret ingredient!

October 9th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
I think Ben and the bunny know what’s good….yum!
October 9th, 2009 at 11:15 pm

October 10th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
What delicious cookies! Yummy!
October 11th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
Love the picture of Ben and the babies sleeping Duckie! How sweet. I make chocolate chip cookies all the time at work for the MR. Except they have to be crisp ones. THey only like crisp cookies up there which means lots of butter. tsk tsk . . . and she thinks they are diet cookies. hehehe
October 12th, 2009 at 6:10 am
That photo of Ben with the babies is SOOOOO sweet! Your honey ROCKS!

Oh My gosh Miranda, look at you, careful there, don’t fall. Pretty impressive to be able to stand on top of the horse like that. I want to ride a horse…..
