A Thanksgiving Feast at the Pond

It was the week of Thanksgiving,
And the Pond was in a uproar.
For Theo the Turkey was hosting a feast,
And no one knew when or where.
“What kind of feast will it be?” they whispered amongst themselves,
their eyes glittering with visions of stuffing and pies loaded with whipped cream.

“It will be a magnificent feast,” Queen Bitty proclaimed,
Who was an expert on such things.
“And we’ll have it in the Land of the Flowered Bed in the corner of the Pond–
They always have wonderful parties.”

“Wonderful!” Pumble cried, who had been greatly worried about what food would be served.
“I’ll bake pies, pumpkin and pecan,
Chocolate and peanut butter and a cheesecake too,
Add some cookies and brownies, maybe a cake or two…
Dear me, I’ve got tons to do!”

As Pumble scurried away in thought,
The Flying Pigs set out for a trot.
“We shall find the prettiest leaves and flowers in the Pond!” they shouted,
“To adorn the tables at our grand feast!”

Queen Bitty nodded in approval.
“That’s all very well and good,” she drawled,
“But what is Theo the turkey doing for entertainment?”
As everyone knew, it wasn’t good to bore the Queen.

“We’ll serve peppermint penguin mojitos!” the pink penguins cried.
“They’ll warm you up and make you feel giddy inside!”

“We can play board games,” Hairy, mayor the Pond suggested.
At Bitty’s scornful frown, he asked, “Twister? Rollerblading?”

“We’ll sing!” the Glitter Chicks shouted. “We shall put on a show!”

“I am a marvelous tap dancer,” Penelope the Pig proclaimed.

“I can bark Christmas carols,” Taco the ceramic dog said.

“I’m a wonderful comedian,” King Baylor of the Stickhorses boasted. “I might even get my own talk show soon!”

As the other animals chattered in excitement,
A screech came from the door.
“That’s all very well to have a show,
But what are we going to eat before?

“We can’t survive on pie and cookies and cakes alone!” Hoot hollered.

“Well, we could,” Who admitted. “But that wouldn’t be a Thanksgiving feast then. It would be simply a fabulous party.”

“With pumpkin bars and cinnamon rolls…” Hoot breathed, beginning to drool.

“And cranberry muffins and pecan pie and muffins glazed in cream cheese icing…” Who continued, smacking his beak together.

“I can bring the stuffing!” Mrs. Frizzle volunteered, who loved anything to do with corn and bread.

“We’ll bring mashed potatoes!” the ducks in the Spa volunteered, with a gleam in their eyes. They had always wanted to stir with their feet.

“I’ll bring the dinner rolls!” Ms. Plumpee the Chicken shouted, who loved baking and never got to do much when Pumble was around.

“I shall organize a list for the feast!” the kitchen fairy cried,
As all the Pond critters jabbered and blabbered.
With a pink pen and a sparkling roll of paper,
The Kitchen fairy sat about assigning dishes and instructing others.

For the next day, the Pond was in a frenzy.
There was cleaning and decorating,
Cooking and baking,
Giggling and dancing all around.

Pumble baked pie after pie,
batches of cookies and whipped up gorgeous cakes,
scones and biscuits and muffins too,

While his love-struck sous chef, Ladybug,
Iced and decorated and mixed,
giggling and blushing the entire time
As she and Pumble cooked together.

Even the Cookie Stealing Bunny was in a pleasant mood,
only stealing two cookies,
instead of quite a few.
(He had to save room for the feast, you know.)

As Bear observed all the preparations,
wuffling about to himself,
The Flying Pigs returned to decorate
And Theo wondered into the room.

“What is all this?” Theo the turkey cried.
“I thought you were all coming to the feast I was throwing!
But with all this baking and cooking,
decorating and cleaning,
it appears my feast is not needed indeed!”

“Don’t get your feelings hurt!” Hoot and Who cried.
“Don’t you see what is happening? We got so excited thinking of what you had planned, we couldn’t wait!
This is the grand Thanksgiving feast of the Pond, and you’re the host!
We wouldn’t dream of it any other way!”

Theo the Turkey began to giggle,
As all the animals filed in one by one carrying steaming dishes and lush baskets of breads,
his gobbler jiggled,
his feathers wiggled.
“It seems that I’m a host,
of a feast I didn’t have to plan!
Now isn’t that grand?”

“Hold on!” Queen Bitty shouted.
“What are we going to eat for a main course?”
Theo the Turkey looked rather worried,
And the Flying Pigs began to edge away quietly.

“Why that’s easy!” Hoot and Who cried,
fluttering their wings.
“Instead of turkey or fowl or geese,
Chicken or fish or game,
We shall have brisket–
it will be Thanksgiving the Texas way!”
The creatures of the Pond cheered,
And Theo the turkey and the Flying Pigs looked quite relieved.
And on this Thanksgiving, hosted by Theo and Queen Bitty,
everyone feasted on fine foods indeed.

There were cinnamon rolls and pumpkin sticky buns,
pecan and sweet potato pie with thick dinner rolls oozing with butter,
cornbread stuffing, cranberry sauce and green beans,
Right next to honey cakes with icing and mashed potato pie.
With brisket and hot dogs and cheesecakes for all,
Everyone agreed,
The Pond Thanksgiving was the best thing this fall.
Stay tuned, Invisible Friends! Tomorrow we have a new ode and Thursday, a tasty Thanksgiving recipe! Then Friday, a brand new Thanksgiving story! Stay tuned!

Sorry that I am not writing as often as I usually do on your site, but we are having some really bad weather here at the moment…and lots of power-cuts, so I’m just trying to go through as many blogs as I can while we still have some power. Gale force winds today!
Have a very happy Thansgiving, and I’m always thinking of you. I miss writing here everyday, but hopefully this won’t last much longer and things will get back to normal!

Oh, to be the host of a feast that you don’t have to plan. I guess that is what catering is for! And yet … it’s almost kind of fun to plan and cook all that stuff. I love the idea of cinnimon rolls at Thanksgiving. That’s a tradition I could enjoy!
