Creative Woman of the Pond: A Southern Grace

Invisible Friends, I am brought to present to you one of my favorite bloggers today. Grace of A Southern Grace was one of the first readers of my blog, back in the day when I was thrilled that someone besides my mother and mother-in-law were reading it. Not only is Grace sweet and loyal, she serves up delicious dishes with drool-inducing pictures and a dry wit. She may be living among the Yankees in New York, but Grace is a true Southern girl, no doubt about it.
Dallas Jean Lee would be proud.
Let’s learn more about her, shall we?

How did you get started blogging? How did you come up with your title/ name?
I initially began my blog when I moved from southwestern VA to NY so I could keep my family updated on my life. How it morphed into a food-focused blog, I have no idea. I picked the name because it can be read two ways—a)my name is Grace and I’m Southern, or b)I exhibit the grace and attitude most commonly associated with the South.
What does being creative mean to you?
I’m actually the least imaginative person I know, so when I make even the simplest change to a recipe, I consider it a great creative success.
What kind of creative things do you do every day?
Well, I pick out my own outfits, design and make my own meals, and try to find new and exciting ways to tame my hair. Do those things count?

Favorite food?
Just one? This changes just about weekly, but how about this—savory=a juicy burger loaded with pepperjack cheese and juicy tomatoes, and sweet=pie a la mode, preferably apple, preferably homemade.
I completely agree. Favorite song?
Again, this will probably be different tomorrow, but today, I’ll say “Pepper” by the Butthole Surfers (how wacky is that for a band name?) and “The Best Day” by Taylor Swift.
Do you like to dance?
I only dance when no one’s around, with one exception—I’ll flat-foot for the world to see.

If you could take a trip with anyone and go anywhere, where would you go and who would you take?
I’d take the Mamster with me to Greece. We share many qualities, including a love for Greek cuisine.
What’s the best gift you’ve ever been given?
Life. Thanks, Mammy.

What’s your ideal pet?
Based on a few recent experiences, my answer to this would be one that never got sick. Alternatively, one that never disturbed my sleep.
There’s an enormous present waiting on the kitchen table for you. What’s in it?
My very own full-size food processor!

How did you get started cooking? Have you always been interested in food?
My Mammy and grandma have always been big cookers, and I’m certain that their influence is what kick-started my love for the kitchen. And yes, I’ve been interested in food for as far as my memory goes back.

What’re your favorite things to cook?
Oddly enough, my favorite things to cook are my favorite things to eat—pies, cakes, burgers, and anything southwestern. Isn’t that peculiar?

Not to me. I’m the same way. (Wiping drool.) What’s your favorite recipe to serve to guests?
I’ll be vague and say anything that elicits “oohs” and “aahs.”

If you were on a desert island and had a water-proof box with six ingredients/ food items in them, what would it be?
Butter. Eggs. Salt. Flour. Sugar. Chocolate.

What do you want to achieve with your blog?
I want to make people laugh and I want to make people slobber.

What do you hope people get from your blog?
Amusement, combined with a good recipe every now and then.
Who’s your favorite chef/ favorite cookbook? Why?
Although I’ve never tried his food, I was really impressed by Rick Bayless in Top Chef Masters—good food and good attitude!
What are your goals with your cooking–do you want to open a restaurant, write a cookbook, get a cooking show?
Mostly, I just want to fill people’s bellies with something that tastes good going down and provides nutrition to boot. If I could ultimately open some sort of bed & breakfast or bakery and subsist, well, that’d just be dandy.
What do you hope to do in the future with your blog?
Entertain myself and anyone who deigns to read it.
What’s the ultimate Southern recipe?
I can’t even begin to answer this one—it depends on the day of the week, nay, the hour of the day.
