Ode to Fall Foods and How I Love Thee

Ode to Fall Foods and How I Love Thee
Ode to Fall Foods,
And how I love thee,
Because o’ fare of autumn,
you are undoubtly the most tasty.

It seems that all my favorite foods,
become popular in fall,
particularly apples,
which besides pumpkins,
are my favorite most of all.

There’s apple pie and apple cake,
apple cinnamon muffins and cookies,
apple tarts with little pastry leaves and apple stuffed chicken or pork,
caramel apples or caramel apple pecan pies…
(Anything dripping with caramel is a winner in my book.)

My second favorite fall foods have to do with pumpkin,
Which you can’t deny,
is both delicious and healthy,
Which means whatever treats I desire, I can have twice as many!
Photo courtesy of Taste of Home.
There are pumpkin bars smothered in cream cheese icing,
Pumpkin cinnamon rolls or pumpkin muffins with cinnamon streusel,
pumpkin cakes and pumpkin pies,
Even pumpkin empanadas for those of us dwelling in the land of cacti.

If I wanted to, actually, I could have pumpkin for every meal for a day,
Pumpkin waffles or pancakes for breakfast,
Pumpkin bread for sandwiches for lunch,
Pumpkin muffins or cinnamon rolls for dinner,
And pumpkin pie for a small smackeral after–
Oh, what a glorious day that would be…
don’t you agree?
My mother’s pumpkin bread is a favorite,
that I look forward to all year.
It’s famous from years of PTA breakfasts, office parties and most gatherings,
and what I give to the neighbors each year for Christmas.

And let’s not forget the other fall fave,
Pecan pie.
Just one bite, one morsel,
And you’ll be so happy you want to die.
(I promise my father feels that way. He’s just so emotional like that.)

And if you really want to kick up your pecan pie a notch,
drown it in cinnamon roll “gravy”, as we say around here.
Your dentist will rejoice, your cardiologist will dance,
And your tailor will swear at you,
as you’ll no longer fit in your pants.
(A small price to pay for such tasty joy, I say.)
And we’ve hardly touched all the other fall foods I adore,
Like stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes,
Sweet potatoes (or yams for you Northerners),
Pears and lucious dinner rolls…all that and more.

Ode to fall foods,
and how I love thee,
From pumpkins to cranberries,
apples to pears,
Stuffing to sweet potatoes,
and pie to pancakes–
Only you,
my dear autumn treats,
can make me eat,
myself into defeat.
Ode to Fall foods,
And how I love thee,
For in fall, I find everything,
Simply wonderfully tasty.
Stay tuned, Invisible Friends! We have a new Isadora tomorrow (it’s almost the end!) and a tasty new recipe Thursday! A new Dallas Jean Friday and some more fall fun Sunday! Stay tuned!

Too much good stuff all at once! All I made over the weekend was a pumpkin cheesecake, and I almost didn’t make it because the stores had run out of pureed pumpkin. I did find a can tucked away in the back of my pantry after crawling on all fours.

I made cranberry-sweet potato bread last night, and it was wonderful. Of course, I had to make cranberry sauce to use the rest of the bag. And your father always looks so thrilled about everything; it makes me laugh. I’m waiting for the boys to bring me apples for some pie!
November 3rd, 2009 at 7:02 am

Not only have you made me incredibly hungry, you’ve made me covet any and all foods made with pumpkin. First up, a Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks because: a) I really need some caffeine right now; and b) I don’t have to make it myself, just hand over the money and scoop up my treat!
