Ode to Thanksgiving and How I Love Thee

Ode to Thanksgiving and How I Love Thee
Ode to Thanksgiving,
and how I love thee,
For no other holiday,
Is as deliciously tasty.
The 4th and its burgers are a delight,
Easter’s has its lovely hams,
Valentine’s day and its luscious candy,
and a good Christmas feast is always a sight.

But Thanksgiving,
The wonderful day of Thanksgiving,
is truly the best holiday around,
no doubts about it, hands down.

First, there is pie instead of gifts (need I say more?),
turkey and mashed potatoes,
stuffing and cranberry sauce,
And biscuits gleaming with butter (or dinner rolls).
Tis a holiday of friendship and gratitude,
Sharing and caring,
Family and strangers coming together,
A truly American staple!

Now, I can hear some of you grumbling,
“Its not such a fine holiday to me.
The potatoes are mushy, the stuffing soggy,
the turkey dry and crunchy.”
For that I am sorry,
but I must say,
for a fabulous Thanksgiving–
Try it my way.

First, you start with a smoked turkey,
Which sets the tone.
Full of flavor and tender and juicy,
it’s a hint of barbecue with gravy–
the best kind of turkey, if you ask me.

We move on to mashed potatoes,
fluffy and light,
buttery and soft,
Don’t just take a few spoonfuls–
If done right, you won’t be able to stop.

Next, we move onto the stuffing,
One of my favorite parts.
Cornbread or sage,
Sausage or sourdough,
Whatever you please–
A good plate of stuffing (not shoved in the turkey while baking),
Is enough to bring me to my knees.

I know what you’re thinking,
And I don’t care.
Canned cranberry sauce,
Is the best thing out there.
Don’t judge me.

While there’s always some vegetable or two,
That’s not really my focus on Thanksgiving.
With thick, luscious buttery rolls,
slathered with more butter, honey or jelly,
or dipped and slid around in plates of gravy and mashed potatoes–
well, sorry veggies.
I’m going with the buttery, fluffy rolls any time,
And anyone would agree with me.
Am I the only one starting to get hungry?

Now, we get to my favorite part of meal,
And in my opinion, the reason for Thanksgiving–
the PIE!
Pumpkin pie is a staple,
And a must at any good feast.
Creamy and rich,
with a flaky tender crust…
Load it up with whipped cream or ice cream,
Whatever you like.
Pumpkin is really good for you, you know,
so feel free to indulge.
I think I’ll have a piece or two..or three,
hey, it’s a holiday.

But the real star,
the A-list staple of the Thanksgiving feast,
Is the pecan pie.
Ode to pecan pie,
and how I love thee.
So rich and creamy,
luscious and tasty…
But that’s another ode for another day.
Ode to Thanksgiving feast,
And how I love thee.
For no other holiday,
Is as deliciously tasty.
I could eat Thanksgiving foods all day,
all year,
but unfortunately, I can’t,
As I would be bigger than an elephant’s rear.
Ode to Thanksgiving,
And how I love thee,
For no other holiday,
Makes me so hungry.
Stay tuned, Invisible Friends! We have a tasty recipe tomorrow and a brand new story Friday, plus the introduction of some of the 12 Christmas artists of the Pond this weekend! For those of you traveling, be safe and merry! And have a happy Thanksgiving!
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some pie and rolls to bake…

Mmm…I LOVE stuffing!! I can’t wait to chow down on some tomorrow!!
Hvae a lovely holiday!
November 25th, 2009 at 5:38 am
The pecan pie looks lovely. My grandmother makes it with pecans throughout, so I’m always surprised when I see pie at the store or restaurants with just the “batter” with pecans on top. The photo you have looks like chopped nuts are throughout. We haven’t shopped yet, though we do have a fresh turkey! I think our best bet is to go to the 24-hour grocery after 11:00 PM…
November 25th, 2009 at 5:45 am
What a great ode! I am not a big fan of pecan pie, but everything else looks and sounds delicious! I hope you have a wonderful holiday!!
November 25th, 2009 at 5:46 am
It’s Wed. and I’ll be making dessert, cranberry dressing, and a make-ahead casserole, while thawing the “boid”…Later, all night in brine, the “boid” will be ready for roasting tomorrow… You know I love to cook, but I would like a bigger crowd!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Can’t wait for tomorrow! Happy Thanksgiving!
November 25th, 2009 at 8:19 am
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday though, surprise surprise, almost every food associated with it is something I don’t like. I’m partial to the sweet stuff, I suppose – pumpkin pie and cranberries. And I have to agree – canned cranberries are the best!
Happy, Happy Thanksgiving!

Oh, I’d LOVE if you’d link this to our Gratitude Party that I’m hosting on my blog! It fits perfectly!

Oh, those pictures are making me mighty hungry.
All these Thanksgiving posts are pure torture for a Canadian like me. Our Thanksgiving is way too early.
November 25th, 2009 at 8:46 am
You know I’m a crank about Thanksgiving food, but I do hope that you enjoy your feast to the fullest.

Sounds good to me!
How come seeing a can of cranberry sauce makes my mouth water?
Have a happy thanksgiving.
November 25th, 2009 at 10:32 am
Loved this post, Duck!
(Much as I love pumpkin, pecan pie is my favorite. I never make it anymore because I would eat the entire thing all by myself!)
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone at the Pond!
Big hug, Barbara

I am in the midst of pumpkin pies and lemon meringue pie. Cakes are next up. Bread later. Stuffing later. Turkey tomorrow. I need a nap! Happy Thanksgiving to all at the Pond with love from our little corner of the world.

Sweet Miranda~I’m strolling in to catch up and especially to wish you and your loved ones a Happy Thanksgiving!
It’s such a wonderful time to stop and reflect on all those we cherish and are truly grateful for.
Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to visit and leave feeling inspired!
Even though our Thanksgiving is very small in number, with hubby and son (we don’t count the cat cause she doesn’t like turkey). We don’t scrimp on the menu…from appetizers to desserts with several carb loaded dishes in between! We will be enjoying tryptophan playoffs too!
Sweet Holiday wishes,
Sara

November 25th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
I’m ready to start cooking! I won’t judge your love of the canned cranberries, but if you ever tasted my cranberry relish, you’d never go back to the jelled berries!
November 25th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
I stopped by to wish you and yours a very happy Thanksgiving! Now I’m stuffed from reading your post!

Hi there, I saw you on Making Lemonade’s McLinky-love your poem and I totally agree Pecan Pie is the A-list star of the show! Happy Thanksgiving!
November 25th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
Loved your ode! I agree that Thanksgiving wouldn’t be the same without PIE! My sister usually makes all the pies, but this year, I get to bake one, too. Cherry is my assignment. Sweet potato is my favorite, though.
Happy Thanksgiving to you!
November 25th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
I loved the reference to the elephant rear. You really crack me up.
November 25th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
I love your pic of the cranberry jelly can!
Happy Thanksgiving Duckie!
November 25th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
Sadly we don’t have Thanksgiving here! I wish we did. Could I come and visit the pond for my fix of pecan pie?
November 25th, 2009 at 5:51 pm
My mother in law asked me what kind of pie I wanted since I never eat the pie and I told her I wanted Turtle Cheesecake…so that’s what she made!!!
Oh, and we deep fry our turkey on Thanksgiving…YUMMO!
Happy Thanksgiving!
November 25th, 2009 at 6:05 pm

(((((HUGS)))))
November 25th, 2009 at 6:43 pm
Happy Thanksgiving! I wish it was a holiday here in Canada. I’m celebrating anyway (with pot roast), but I have to go get my oil changed, which TOTALLY ruins the thanksgiving ambience. However, between the food and the sitting down afterwards to plan my Black Friday (online) shopping strategy, my first American Thanksgiving promises to be swell!!
November 25th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in Europe, but I’m wishing you and yours a laughter-filled time full of good food, friends and delicious pies!
November 25th, 2009 at 9:37 pm
Happy Thanksgiving! I just might have to try the cranberries from the can. I never have before!
November 26th, 2009 at 12:07 am
You had me at pie. It’s the middle of the night and I’m already drooling about tomorrows goodies. Happy Thanksgiving!
November 26th, 2009 at 12:25 am
We don’t celebrate thanksgiving here in NZ but your delicious food makes me want to!!!
November 26th, 2009 at 2:00 am
Happy thanksgiving! Don’t you just love pumpkin pie?
November 26th, 2009 at 6:52 am
Thank you this day! All my foodie dreams are coming true. YA YA YUM!
I am a turkey, mashed potatoes, and gravy kind of girl. And the pies, oh how I love the pies!
Wonderful ode, that just made my day. Happy Thanksgiving!
November 26th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
This post is making me seriously hungry …
November 29th, 2009 at 11:21 pm
Your Thanksgiving feast sounds fabulous Duckie. I love canned cranberry sauce myself. Can’t get it here! Oh, I have missed reading you! With Thanksgiving up at the big house last week, the housekeeper off sick and a house filled with guests, I barely had time to breathe! I am most surprised I managed to post each morning as I did. The guests are all gone now and hopefully the housekeeper will be back at work today! (fingers crossed!) Then things can be back to normal! I hope that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you’ll forgive me for being slack in my blog reading! I love you most of all! xxoo
December 1st, 2009 at 5:20 pm
Totally agree with you about the canned sauce. In fact, dh took a photo that looks just like the one you have…LOL!
December 1st, 2009 at 7:51 pm
Thanks so much for linking this up to my gratitude party! I’m such a sucker for canned cranberry sauce and stuffing. Now you’ve got me craving it again.
