Confessions of a Christmas Ornament

Hello. I’m Betina the Ballerina.
Yes, Chihuahuas can be ballerinas. Who told you otherwise?
Well, they’re wrong.

If a hippo can be a ballerina, a Chihuahua can be a ballerina.

I am a ballerina.
I’ve danced in Sleeping Beauty, Gisele, Cinderella and countless other productions.

As a Chihuahua ballerina, my small size and long tail let me bounce and twirl across stage, the lights twinkling overhead and shimmering across my tutu.
But….I do have a confession.
It’s been worrying me so.
It’s been haunting my thoughts….
Creeping in the corners of my dreams….
Skulking in the back of my mind…

(Tiny sigh.)
You see, Invisible Friends, for as long as I’ve been dancing, I’ve wanted to play the Sugarplum Fairy in the Nutcracker.
I’ve dreamed of twirling across the stage in an etheral white tutu, fluttering across the floor in all four of my toe shoes. My paws would fly across the stage, my tail wagging joyfully as I twirled and swirled.
As we have a performance of The Nutcracker every year at the Pond’s Christmas Tree Ball, I thought I had it for sure. I showed up to auditions confident I would have the part.

And then I saw the Snowflake Fairy.

And my heart sank to the pad of my pink paws.

She was good.
Really good.
She whipped across the stage like a flurry of snow, her toe shoes never making a sound as she piroutted and leaped across the stage. Every move she made was followed by a tinkling of bells, every motion more full of grace than the first.
You see, Invisible Friends, for the first time, I’m scared I won’t get the part.
Sure, I’ve been in the Nutcracker before–as Clara, one of the children, Mother Ginger…but I dream of being a Sugarplum Fairy.

I’m just a simple Chihuahua ballerina with sugarplums dancing in my head.
I suppose I’ll find out Tuesday at the Pond Christmas Tree Ball…
Wish me luck!
Stay tuned, Invisible Friends! We have a week full of holiday whimsy approaching!

Need some Christmas in your life? Go here!

Betina, we’re all rooting for you! And you are clearly a morally upright ornament… but I’m just sayin’ the Snowflake Fairy’s ankles look pretty weak.

OMG Duckie – that ornament is tooo cute! How fun! Are you ready for Christmas. I am starting to panic. Eeeek!
I’m having a linky party on Monday about homemade gifts and was wondering if you would link up one of your cookie or pie recipes? It can be an old post, so you don’t need to write anything new. But I would love people to come over and see your stories. I love your Christmas book!

Love your ornaments! I have some cherished favorites too…you gave me the idea to photograph them. Never thought of it! I broke two this year- one in the box and the other I knocked off the tree. (Tears here) Would have been willing to blame someone else, but I confess, it was moi!
Re your previous post: Nothing, absolutely nothing should ever come before cinnamon rolls! AND I can’t wait to hear Grayson’s wager!

I love Bettina! She is so you – tiny, pink and fluffy!
December 17th, 2009 at 11:33 am
Too cute!
She TOTALLY reminds me of one of my furbabies! She is half Chihuahua, half Boston Terrier. She is a brute, but thinks she is a tiny, girly, princess! In reality, she looks like the ballerina hippo!
