Ode to Pecan Pie and How I Love Thee

Ode to Pecan Pie and How I Love Thee
Ode to pecan pie,
and how I love thee,
for I could eat you,
from now to eternity.
I’m not quite sure,
What draws me to pecan pie so much.
Is it the sweet nut topping,
the gooey, rich interior,
countered by a soft flaky crust?

Or is it the pure sweetness,
that sticks to your teeth and tongue,
So addictive and delicious,
that it makes you scream for more.

Before pecan pie,
I was a strictly apple pie girl.
No cream or meringue,
no pumpkin or coconut,
No blueberry or cherry for me.
It was either strudel or regular double crust apple all the way.

But then one day,
At a barbecue joint no less,

The same place where I plowed through a pound of meat with my dad staring in both horror and admiration…
I tried pecan pie.
The angels sang and the heavens opened,
And from that day on, my heart has belonged to both pecan and apple pie.
And blueberry pie. And coconut cream. And especially peanut butter pie…but that’s another ode.

The tricky thing about pecan pie, you see,
is that it is as mercurial and temperamental as a old lady.
If you don’t have the right recipe, with the proper amount of sugar and corn syrup,
The pecan pie will simply refuse to to be tasty.

I’ve had burnt pies,
gooey pies,
raw pies,
caramelized to a crisp pies that not even Booger the Lobster would guard.
For awhile, I was bitter,
Jaded and annoyed,
With so many pecan pie recipes,
dark sugar, light brown sugar, dark and light syrup–even honey,
How could I go wrong? What was I doing?

But with this new recipe,
whispered to me at the hair dresser’s,
where all good recipes lurk in the shadows of the sparkly bottles,
I found the perfect pecan pie,
both rich and decadent,
crisp and crunchy,
flaky and tender.

Perfect with gravy,
perfect without,
adored by both the Austin and Shreveport crowds,
people were leaping for seconds and licking their plates clean,
popping their pant buttons and rubbing their expanded bellies.

The only regret I have,
I must admit,
is now that I’ve found the perfect pecan pie recipe,
I must refrain from making it as often as I like,
Or I would need a crane to lift me from my house,
As my hips and thighs would be that wide.
I simply can’t resist pecan pie,
It’s true.
I yearn for it, I crave it,
I eat pieces in twos (it’s rather embarrassing, really.)

Ode to pecan pie,
And how I love thee.
For without you, dear pecan pie,
My life would be far less tasty.
Holidays would lose their luster,
Thanksgiving would be dull,
Christmas a bit less brighter,
And summer would be just a hot blur.
Without a sweet bit of pecan pie and ice cream,
birthdays and barbecues would just be depressing.

Ode to pecan pie,
And how I love thee,
For as temperamental as you are,
you sure are tasty.

You know there’s a lot of love involved when you write an ode (I speak from experience) – I have a normandy pie recipe that has chocolate chips and pecans – yummm! I think after writing such a work of art, you should have 2(double) pieces of pecan pie = 4! However, I do think you should e-mail all of us a piece!
January 5th, 2010 at 1:32 pm
Mamma mia !It looks too fabulous !!!

Nothing better in the world than a pecan pie!!! A few years ago a group of us went to Savannah for a house tour and bought a pecan pie from a restaurant famous for their pecan pies. We sat in our hotel room and ate it with our fingers! Gooey, messy and delicious!

Yum!
I mean, not really *whispering* I don’t like pecan pie.
I know, I feel somewhat ashamed.
Still, your post makes me feel guilty.
All that pecan pie I’ve rejected in my life.
I hope it knows it’s nothing personal.
