Butter Me Up

I’m going to tell you a secret.
A secret I’ve never told anyone.
Promise you won’t tell?
Pinkie swear?
Cross your heart and hope to die?

(whispering) Sometimes I plan meals around bread.

Fluffy biscuits, cinnamon rolls, dinner rolls, a thick loaf of honey bread, crusty French bread, soft garlic bread….there’s so many options.
I obviously don’t fear carbs.
As for these buttermilk dinner rolls, they’ll recruit any scared carb-avoider and safely harbor your own dinner secrets. Light and fluffy, with just a hint of chewy, they’re like a cross between a biscuit and your grandmother’s dinner rolls.

And they came out of my Austin Junior League Cookbook, and you know what fabulous recipes junior league cookbooks hold.
Millions and millions of fabulous recipes…

Don’t these rolls deserve to be the star of dinner?
Of course they do. Make them today. You’ll love them forever.

Buttermilk Dinner Rolls
From Lone Star Legacy II
1 1/2 packages yeast
1/4 cup warm water
1 cup buttermilk
3 tblspn sugar
3 tblspn oil
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
3 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
melted butter
Dissolve yeast in warm water. In a large mixing bowl mix buttermilk, sugar, oil, baking powder and baking soda. Add yeast after dissolved. Add enough flour to make a stiff dough. Let rise until doubled in size. Punch down and shape as desired. Placed in greased muffin tins and let rise until doubled. Bake at 400 degrees for eight to ten minutes. Yields 18 rolls. After baking, brush tops with melted butter.

I don’t have her cookbook, but know about it, and her. She was married to Billy Joel, had a food blog years ago. Think it’s a southern cooking type book. Sounds interesting.
February 25th, 2010 at 5:06 am
You are speaking my language, Miss Chick!! Those sound delicious and what is wrong with planning dinner around bread?! Love it.
xoxo,
Connie

Everything in moderation, right? That includes the yummy, luscious bready bits, too!
Those rolls look amazing. No surprise they’re from Jr League books–my 3 River Road cookbooks are a constant reference for this Louisiana belle transplated to N.Florida!
Keep Dancing!

They look fantastic and good bread is a sure weakness of mine.
February 25th, 2010 at 6:22 am
These look great! I love bread too. When I was a kid my parents would have to take away the fresh baked bread from the dinner table or I would fill up on that and only that. It’s so pathetic that I can’t pull myself away from fresh bread and rolls….. yum!
February 25th, 2010 at 6:34 am
They’re scrumptious! Don’t tell anyone but sometimes when my husband is out of town, I only have bread for dinner (like toasted flatbreads) and coffee
February 25th, 2010 at 6:41 am

February 25th, 2010 at 6:57 am

Yet another recipe I have to print out and use! I love bread more than any other food…mmmm!
February 25th, 2010 at 8:51 am
I’ve had one dinner roll in my entire life – it was not fresh-baked and tasted gross. Hence my avoidance of them ever since. Now…I think I could eat an entire basket of these – I may need to try this recipe. Immediately!!
February 25th, 2010 at 9:30 am
Those look amazing! Fresh bread with dinner, what could be better than that?
February 25th, 2010 at 9:38 am
I want a buttery roll please!!!
February 25th, 2010 at 9:52 am
These look fabulous. I am going to try them tonight. I love bread too. I could just eat that and butter and be very happy. Lia
February 25th, 2010 at 10:06 am
I bought a Bread Making machine just because I love the smell of fresh bread! But I do have a tip for refreshing stale bread. Just brush the tops with milk, and put into a hot oven for a few minutes, and they come out fresh and just like new!
February 25th, 2010 at 10:07 am
Yum!
February 25th, 2010 at 10:20 am
These look wonderful and I absolutely adore buttermilk roles. I’ll have to give these a try.

Oh my! Those rolls look fantastic!!! Thanks for being such a great visitor and commenter on my foodie blog. I do appreciate your popping by and apparently I need to catch up over here.
I am the same way with bread – no bread can stand a chance in my presence. I tend to keep going back to any leftovers too until there are none.

I think Eli would look pretty sweet on a Harley!

February 25th, 2010 at 5:12 pm
Bread, rolls, loafs, etc – more is better as far as I’m concerned. These look as though they invite seconds.
February 25th, 2010 at 6:09 pm
oh my gosh… i can almost smell them!
February 25th, 2010 at 7:27 pm
It’s always about the bread. Love it!
February 25th, 2010 at 8:28 pm
You are the second person today to blog about dinner rolls AND post a recipe. I am taking it as a sign. Carbs are my friends and I am totally awesome for being so completely in love with bread. Thanks!

Ha, a girl after my heart! I’m the same way and also judge restaurants on the bread they serve before the meal. These look SO amazing. I wish I could smell them.

February 25th, 2010 at 10:39 pm
Those look SO good! I could seriously live off of homemade bread!! Thanks for sharing the recipe!
And thank you for stopping by my blog…hope you’ll be back again soon! And yes, the checker actually said that to me about the Morningstar sausages, although she didn’t say “explosive diarrhea”. She said, “These gave me such horrible cramps and I got the worst case of the runs that I’ve ever had”. I just creatively edited it…LOL
February 26th, 2010 at 1:28 am
Ciao ! they look so good and soft… my kids would absolutely love them !!
February 26th, 2010 at 6:15 am
Lately I’ve had this huge desire to make my own bread, old school style.
But then I remember I’m lazy.
It’s pretty sad.

Wow Duckie…. That recipe sounds amazing. Since I love BREAD–most any kind, this one sounds really special. What did you serve with it ???
My mother was an excellent cook. I didn’t get that talent from her–but she made the best cheese rolls in the entire world. I have never had any like them. (She died in 1991.)
Hugs,
Betsy
