If I could go anywhere today…
If I could go anywhere today,
I’d go to San Francisco.
Dance along the Golden Gate Bridge,
Sing with the seals on the wharf,
And eat plenty of that sourdough bread.

If I could go anywhere today,
I’d go to Colorado like it is in the summer.
Ride horseback among the mountain ridges dotted with wildflowers,
bike through the thick forests,
Paddleboat across sparkling lakes,
And eat plenty of good mountain food.

If I could go anywhere today,
I’d go to Portland, Maine, in the summer.
I’d scamper among the rocky beaches looking for starfish and crabs,
Peer from the lighthouses.
I’d adopt a lobster friend named Booger,
Search the seas for whales,
And eat plenty of fish chowder,
Just like a sea captain would do.

If I could go anywhere today,
I’d go to Cornado Island.
I’d search for the ghost in the famous hotel,
run up and down the black glittering beaches
just like the tiny crabs do.
I’d rent a boogie board and hit the waves,
in a wet suit, just like all the real surfers do,
Eat plenty of tasty grilled fish and my burritos barrio-style,
and pretend (for a few days) I was a California girl.

If I could go anywhere today,
I’d go to Treasure Island, Florida.
I’d swim along the shore with the dolphins,
mumble on to the manatees,
And do the stingray shuffle across the sand.
I’d take a boat into the crystal blue water,
and snorkel with the fishes,
And then dig into some blackened grouper
And some soft peanut butter ice cream.

If I could go anywhere today,
I’d go to Alaska.
I’d serenade the mooses,
Frolic with the black bears,
Fly above the trees in one of the tiny planes,
And eat tons and tons of halibut.
Oh, I do love halibut.

If I could go anywhere today,
I’d go to New Orleans.
I’d run around the French quarter,
scamper through the swamps,
visit all the voodoo shops and buy a shrunken head or two,
And eat plenty of beignets and bread pudding,
With a po’ boy and lots of fried catfish to top it off.

If I could go anywhere today,
I’d go to Germany.
I’d wonder through all the castles,
look for fairy tales in the Black Forest,
troll through the markets for the perfect cuckoo clock and of course,
let Ben drive me wildly about on the Autobahn.
Then I would eat as many schnitzels and strudels and sausage and pretzels as I could stuff down my gullet,
Just to get the true experience, of course.

If I could go anywhere today,
I’d go to West Texas, right along the New Mexico border,
All the way to Fort Davis and the mountains.
When I was growing up, I spent many summers and winters out there,
playing in a desert you could see for miles,
hanging out with relatives and my grandfather
And feeling at once so very big, and so very small.

But I think today, if I could go anywhere,
I think I might go somewhere more familiar.
Because as much as I love to wonder and roam,
my favorite place to go is home.
Stay tuned, Invisible Friends! Tomorrow we have a new pet shop story and Thursday, a delectable recipe! Friday a new Dallas Jean and Saturday, some Valentine Day love! Stay tuned!

Ooooh Love this poem – so gorgeous because while I would love to go to all those places, too, I am obsessed with home. There is no place like home!
February 9th, 2010 at 2:59 am
That’s awfully sweet! That picture of Germany is quite tempting, though, that’s for sure!! Stopping by from SITS, have an awesome day.

So sweet!! That is the truth, there is no place better than home.
February 9th, 2010 at 5:45 am

February 9th, 2010 at 5:49 am

Wow! I was thinking the very same thing this morning when I woke up, and voila~Here you are posting about traveling…Right now, I’m in the mood for California, too. Aahh to be a Cali. girl…Just for a day. I so want to go visit Cal. again and maybe this time actually get to see more of it and perhaps even Venice Beach?…Just because…I desperately want to soak in the culture and the colors…and the eccentricity of L.A….I NEED something different in my life now & again, ya know? A break from my Mayberry-ish existance.
Good day!
February 9th, 2010 at 6:16 am
What a wonderful poem. What is it about New Orleans that hooked me so quickly? I never imagined I would love it SO much. I am a lover of home too…it is fun to travel…but it feels SO good to be home.
February 9th, 2010 at 6:17 am
The place that I would go today would be right here, but then I have tonsillitus and am feeling pretty yuk! But I would really like to go anywhere where the sun is shining and we don’t have any snow! Cold I can deal with, but this Winter seems to have dragged on for far too long!
Loved your poem!
February 9th, 2010 at 6:20 am
People who write poetry amaze me. How do you do it? Love the poem.
I love S.F. If I could go anywhere right now it would be England, where Jane Austen lived.

Loved reading your poem! It made me think. I have a lovely day or two in store for me, so I am happy to be here this week.
But I usually want to be on an island in the Caribbean!
February 9th, 2010 at 6:41 am
What a great poem!! If I could go anywhere it would be Paris, France. But I agree–only for a few weeks and then I would want to come back home. For a month or so and then I would want to go to Disneyland. (0:

That is such a great poem. You’re so talented. I don’t know why but the poem sorta made me teary eyed. I think I’m to emotional…haha.

Sounds like a nice trip! I want to go to San Francisco too
February 9th, 2010 at 8:38 am

If I could go anywhere today, come to Turin and see Piazza San Carlo, Piazza Castello, via Po, the Mole Antonelliana, the picturesque hills, the wonderful Alps!

Aw, I love this post!
If I could go anywhere today, I would go someplace that wasn’t predicted to get another 10-20 inches of snow today. Because if the weatherman is right, I might loose my mind, and the place I’ll have to go is a sanitarium.
February 9th, 2010 at 10:45 am
I love San Francisco!
February 9th, 2010 at 10:53 am
I love that you love good food! Enjoy your familiar day at home!
February 9th, 2010 at 10:56 am
So sweet!
Um, where is Canada?
February 9th, 2010 at 11:34 am
This is lovely. I would rather be ANY of those places today. Instead I’m about to be buried under more snow. *sad*
February 9th, 2010 at 12:28 pm
Great poem but you really had me with the peanut butter ice cream and then later, the bread pudding…yummy! Not much sugar or sweets in my diet these days and those just sound delish!
February 9th, 2010 at 12:58 pm
I know you’re a writer but wow, did you really write this? It’s beautiful. I just love it. Very well done. And all the places look beautiful. And so does home!
February 9th, 2010 at 1:03 pm
Darn! I was hoping you needed a companion with which to travel. I love the spots we almost got to see together. Have a great day. Blessings…Mary
February 9th, 2010 at 1:50 pm
That’s a really cool poem. I’d like to go to some of those places. It would be nice if it only took a moment to get there. I’d love to be able to just have 3 hours here and there whenever to explore some of the amazing places on this earth!
February 9th, 2010 at 2:13 pm
What a wonderfully written journey – thanks for taking us along with you!

February 9th, 2010 at 3:34 pm
The only place like home is the beach house. That’s where I’d like to be right now. Wonder if it’s snowing there? Hmmmm… off to visit the pier’s web-cam…

February 10th, 2010 at 5:27 am
Looks like you’ve been to some really interesting places. I love to travel, but it is always nice to come home. If I could go anywhere today I’d go to Kauai, and sit on the beach and just watch the waves.

Aww, how sweet! There’s no place like home.
February 10th, 2010 at 1:20 pm
Yes, you can use red potatoes!
February 10th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
That’s lovely. I noticed an “I’d eat plenty of theme” going throughout. Sounds like you’d be a super fun travel buddy.
I would pick Italy, Paris, or Hawaii.
February 11th, 2010 at 2:16 pm
I love the last photo – it’s perfect – no place like home.
