On one rainy, cold night…

One one cold, rainy night…
Under a blanket grey skies streaked with ribbons of icy wind,
They drove out to a little restaurant outside of town,
far from the city lights.
Her hair had been cut and styled that day,
Her outfit carefully chosen.
He tucked his shirt in,
And made sure his jeans were clean.

In a tiny Texas town,
In an unpretentious spot behind a gas station,
lay a fine restaurant in an antique building.
With dark wooden floors and white tables glowing with candlelight,
And walls decorated with oil paintings of local landmarks glimmering with bright colors.
Run by a chef who had cooked in Washington D.C. and New Orleans,
Studied under the best,
Now cooking filet mignon, puff pastry king ranch chicken, white chocolate bread pudding and salmon,
For pure joy in a town of less than five thousand.

With the sleet and ice,
They were the only ones there to dine that night.
Shown to a cozy nook,
They gazed at each other in the candlelight.

In the warm golden glow,
They giggled nervously in the quiet room.
Feeling like children invited to the adults’ table as they buttered the delicate sourdough with a dried-sun tomato butter,
As the waiters whisked quietly around them, refilling glasses and offering wine and champagne choices.
“We never go out like this,” she giggled,
trying to keep crumbs from dropping on the table.
He took her hand and smiled, told her how beautiful she was.
“It’s been far too long,” he said, “Since we’ve enjoyed ourselves.”
As they dined on salads with roasted almonds, goat cheese, sundried cranberries and a raspberry champagne vinaigrette,
A quiet magic settled over them.
Smiles grew brighter, eyes glittered,
And fingers lingered across palms, stroking down arms.

By the time they got to their filet mignons,
With green chili mashed potatoes,
They were both floating in a cloud of bliss.
Every bite was better than the last,
Every word was sweeter than the first.
And by the time the white chocolate bread pudding came out,
Their hearts and stomachs were ready to burst.

Holding hands,
She nestled against him on the way home,
The bright lights glittering on the horizon,
As they wound their way back into the city on the quiet highway roads under the dark icy skies.
Once inside,
They moved with a sense of urgency.
They peeled off their coats, pulled on their pjs….

And snuggled with the other loves of their life.

Fingers entwined,
Her head on his shoulder,
His arm around her and the two fuzzy creatures by their feet,
They were asleep by nine,
Their bellies and hearts full.

It was a perfect Valentine’s Day in the Pond.
