Song of Spring

In a dark kitchen,

Early on a Saturday morning,

When the sunlight is just starting to kiss the edges of the sky,

And the edges of evening begin to fray,

The pie bird opens his mouth,

And sings the song of spring.

DSC03990

He sings of flowers, of blossoming trees,

He sings of green grass and blue skies,

Of baby animals and young couples,

frolicking in days of sun touched by a cool breeze.

DSC05445

He sings of pastels and fresh new dresses,

That swish and swirl like a dandelion around all young girls,

Always eager for a good twirl.

bunny-cookie

He sings of Easter morning and bunnies and chicks,

Of garden parties and baby showers and bridal luncheons.

He sings of pink and yellow, violet and green,

For is there anything as beautiful as spring?

Chivalry-iris

The bird sings of rainy days and crisp mornings,

Of lush flowers and tiny butterflies.

He sings of how the world comes alive again,

Joy echoing in hearts and happy sighs,

As the sunshine comes back into everyone’s life.

peanut-butter-pie

And of course, being a pie bird, he sings about spring pie,

About delicate lattice apple and blueberry,

Peanut butter and coconut cream,

Pies full of custard and meringue.

DSC03989

The sun dapples through the trees,

the dew shimmers on the flowers like tiny diamonds.

And as the world begins to greet the day,

The pie bird puts his song away.

For he will sing again tomorrow, and the day after that,

Because when it comes to spring,

It’s a season worth singing.

Stay tuned, Invisible Friends!  We have a week full of whimsy coming up!

First of all, if I had a pie bird, would the pie magically appear? Your post about spring is lovely – filled with everything that makes the season so special (even pie!).

Your pie bird is a happy bird! He must love sitting in all your luscious pies!!
Spring can’t be too far behind, can it?

  17. TeresaR Says:

Bird songs are definitely harbingers of spring! Our cardinals and song sparrows have been going at it, and the eastern phoebes, which have come back for the season, have joined in. :)

  18. Teri M. Says:

Thanks for a lovely song pie bird! :)

  19. Marjie Says:

Do you bake your blackbird in a pie? I want a coconut custard pie. I have been thinking about it for 3 days. No one else who’s home will eat coconut, so I would be forced to eat it all by myself. Sad, right?

  20. Kimberly Says:

That peanut butter pie gets me every time! :)

  32. Ramona Says:

    COME ON Spring!

  33. Rachel (S[d]OC) Says:

Well, pie is certainly worth singing about!

Reading some of your comments on my blog and others I’m convinced you and I need to have a little kitchen pow-wow! What would it take for you to buy a ticket to NY and come spend some time in my kitchen so we can make some roast chicken (and then we make stock with the bones and matzah balls with the excess fat) and risotto and all sorts of other stuff together. Then I can have my much-coveted time inside your brain and we can have dance breaks together!

  34. Melissa Miller Says:

I’m ready for Spring! Precious post and chickies. :)
