The Pie Shop Blues

When I woke up last Saturday morning,

I had a hankering for pie.

Flaky, sweet apple,

Or a thick slice of pecan so sweet it’d make your grandma cry.

So I called my buddy Angela,

And I didn’t have to say a word.

“It’s time for pie,” she said,

“I’ll meet you in Fredericksburg.”

The pie shop was a tradition for us,

For three years now.

Every time we went, I got apple,

I’m drooling at the thought.

For this was no ordinary apple pie you see,

With a flaky cinnamon sugar crust,

So tender and almost like a snickerdoodle,

Soft apples piled high,

One bite, and out of pure joy I could die.

My buddy Angela is more adventurous than me,

She’s tried orange pecan,

peanut butter cup,

And Saturday, she partook in a pie tasting.

For six dollars,

She got six tiny slices of pie.

As for me, I stuck with apple,

With a tiny piece of pecan–just a little bite.

At first, we were excited,

Nearly bouncing with glee.

It was a pretty, sunny crisp Spring Day,

And we both had pie–the most important thing!

Nearly bursting with joy, I slid my fork through my pie,

I took a bite and frowned,

Something just wasn’t right.

Angela too was quiet,

Thinking as she chewed.

“There’s something different,” she whispered,

“This is not the pie we knew.”

And although I cleared the plate,

I sadly had to agree.

The pie was not the pie I loved,

It was not the pie of my dreams.

The crust had sugar,

But was flat and not flaky,

The apples had only a touch of cinnamon,

and were thick and not tasty.

As for Angela,

Only one of her six slices got a smile,

Mainly because it tasted like a brownie,

And not a pie at all.

Glum, we stared at our empty plates,

And thought of the calories we had consumed.

“There’s a cookie shop around the corner,” Angela suggested.

To which I replied, “Should I get one scoop or two?”

So while our pie shop has fallen into meritocracy,

We’re still optimistic.

For next time we’re going to Chuy’s in Austin,

To let fajitas and flan cure our desolate pie trip.

After all, there’s not much queso and Amy’s Ice Cream won’t cure,

As for pies,

I’ll bake my own,

Because I know they’ll be good!

Stay tuned, Invisible Friends!  We’ve got a new Dallas Jean tomorrow!  Saturday, we have a sweet Mother’s Day tribute!  Stay tuned!

Okay, you clearly live in some adorable, amazing world, where you having pie and cookie shops!

Though SO tragic about the pie. I’m so terribly sorry.

  4. TeresaR Says:

Oh man, it IS a bummer that the pie shop no longer makes good pies, but what a total joy it is to have a pie buddy!! Homemade pies are the best anyway. :)

The 6 pie sample sounds great but too bad it wasn’t as delicious as you had planned! Don’t you hate when that happens!

  7. Angela Says:

Too funny! I love your recounting of our pie date. See you at Chuy’s!

  8. buffalo dick Says:

I feel your pain.. When they change the recipe on something you looked forward to, you ought to let them know it- loudly!

  9. joeinvegas Says:

Did you ask why things had changed? Or just accept it and not go back?

  10. Rachel (S[d]OC) Says:

Aw..sorry that pie wasn’t what you wanted. I discovered a new pie shop in a reasonable distance of my favorite ice cream place. The pie shop has no seating though. It’s like going to a bake sale! I’ve only tried one of their pies (a delicious chocoalte cream) but I know that if it were bad, ice cream would be a short drive away.

The best pies are usually the ones that come out of our own ovens for sure.

  11. Kristina P. Says:

That sounds like one delicious day! Even if the pies did disappoint.

  20. Marjie Says:

The ruination of the pie shop is sad news indeed. Go have ice cream instead.

  21. Alice in Wonderland Says:

Oh, that is so annoying! You go to buy something that you have eaten for ages, only to find that “It is new and improved”. Then what was wrong with it in the first place?
It is great to find a new place and you enjoyed their cakes and pies!
    Big Hugs!

  22. blueviolet Says:

I’m sorry it wasn’t up to standards. Homemade is better anyhow!

  25. Mhe-Lhanee Benito Says:

Oh no! Sorry to hear that. I can feel how frustrated you were. It happened to me so many times. I crave for something, i get to eat it, then it wasn’t the way I want it. Thanks for dropping by at my site… U

  28. Faith Says:

Oh no, that’s too bad about the pie! At least the ice cream was still delicious! :)

  29. Jen Says:

Okay, even though your pie didn’t live up to your expectations, your post sure did get me in the mood for some really good pie. I just might have to bake my own too this week! or get on a plane and try some of yours. lol :)

  30. Lady Fi Says:

What a let down after looking forward to all those pies… Better luck next time!

  31. marie Says:

awww what a disappointment!! Did you register your complaint with them? I would have told them that their pies were not as good as they used to be. Perhaps they would be able to figure out what the change was and fix it!! I would love to have an opportunity to bake you a pie! xxoo

  32. grace Says:

boo for pie disappointment! but let’s be honest–mediocre pie is still pie. :)

  33. heatherlyn Says:

Oh gosh! Now I’m craving fajitas and homemade pie!!! I want a pie friend!

  34. Reeni Says:

I hate when that happens! You find some place you love and go often and then suddenly one day something’s different. Not the same. It happens to me all the time. I wish I had a friend who liked to eat.
