Blond Burritos

For those of you who didn’t know, I’m a natural blond.
And all that implies.

But I’m also a native Texan. And automatically, as a native Texan, you’re born with a love of Tex-Mex.

An adoration for tacos…

An addiction to enchiladas…

A craving for fajitas…

And of course, a burning desire for burritos.

Down here, my favorite burrito haunt is Freebirds. With burritos the size of a small child called Monster and Super Monster, how could you not love it? I always get the half-bird, rolled up in a wheat tortilla with tons of refried beans (I’ve had workers stare at me and say, “You know it’ll be squishy, right?” Bring on the squishy, beany burritos!) a sprinkling of rice, shredded cheese, chicken, roasted peppers, pico de gallo, sour cream and guacamole….Oh, it’s heaven. They teach you a special way to unwrap it so it doesn’t go everywhere and you eat it with the burrito standing up.

Plus, I love the fact that after you’re done, you can take your leftover foil, scuplt a creation and leave it on the wall.
Ben and I left snails at the one here. Mine is rather large and dopey looking.

Being a duckie who gets obsessed with things easily, it’s no surprise that I decided to make my own burritos. For some reason, Ben didn’t seem amused when I asked him to take me to Freebirds for lunch. And dinner. And breakfast. Every day. For weeks on end.
I have no idea why.
But, in my naivety, I forgot the most important thing.
Blonds can’t roll burritos. At least, presentable burritos. Tasty burritos, yes. Pretty burritos, no.
Are you ready for the horror? I can prove it.
Are you sure?
Positive?
Ok. You asked for it.

(Hiding face in shame)

Sigh.
I can assure you, it was delicious. And all the ones I made after that were.

At least I know I can make presentable nachos.
Maybe not.
Stay tuned, Invisible Friends! We have a new Comfort and Whimsy coming up and more delicious and whimsical fun! Stay tuned!

Love burritos. Come make me one please?! I can’t roll them either.
July 22nd, 2010 at 2:47 am
I bet they were yummy, its not easy to roll them up though. I think u just overstuffed them
(which is what i like to do too). I have this idea of baking tons and tons of burritos and then freezing them and have burritos on tap. I hear they freeze really well. You should put up a burrito recipe daaaahling.

What other blond traits do you have?
July 22nd, 2010 at 9:49 am
After your food posts, I instantly crave whatever it is you’re telling me about. You must do one soon on salads! Blondes have no trouble with Romaine, I’m told.
July 22nd, 2010 at 9:53 am
Yummy post, darling!

If you take up staring at containers of frozen orange juice because they say “concentrate,” then I’ll worry. Beyond that, the food needs to taste good, and appearance is secondary.
July 22nd, 2010 at 11:21 am
What a fun restaurant! buritos are my faves.
Love the #1 pic!
B xx
P.S.
Thanks so much for your lovely comments on my blog! They mean a lot!

Road trip!!!

July 22nd, 2010 at 1:28 pm
I have heartburn just reading this. I think it’s more than my scrawny Pennsylvania stomach can take!
July 22nd, 2010 at 1:42 pm
I think their beautiful with all that filling oozing out! You made my tummy grumble…and now I’m craving Tex-Mex food!
July 22nd, 2010 at 3:01 pm
I’ve never once doubted that you are a natural blonde. You have the spunk and fun of blondes that cannot be imitated!
July 22nd, 2010 at 3:28 pm
I think messy burritos = deliciousness! Looks wonderful to me
July 22nd, 2010 at 3:58 pm
I’m a Burrito Babe myself. Rock on, Tejana!
July 22nd, 2010 at 4:17 pm

sweetlife
July 22nd, 2010 at 4:57 pm
It’s the ugly, sloppy burritos that taste the best! Just ask me, I can’t roll them either.
July 22nd, 2010 at 5:37 pm
I believe you – that burrito looks delicious – who cares if it ain’t perfect, as the taste is what matters!
July 22nd, 2010 at 6:49 pm
I’ll have to agree with the Urban Cowboy! I think it’s all in the way you stuff the shell. Then again I worked at Taco Bell for my first job not a classy place like Freebirds. LOL
July 22nd, 2010 at 7:00 pm
I love any and all Mexican food! I think your burrito looks just fine… a little messy but tasty.
July 22nd, 2010 at 7:11 pm

July 22nd, 2010 at 11:20 pm
I love tex mex too but without being a blonde or Texan!
July 23rd, 2010 at 4:15 am
Messy burritos are the bomb! I’m just going to call you the adorable blond “bombshell” that makes messy burritos when not twirling and dancing in the rain or dragging Ben to Freebirds (love that name too) and that’s final! I sure could use some fajitas…
July 23rd, 2010 at 4:32 am
Not from Texas, but love all the foods you listed. I seem to roll a burrito okay, but do have problems with everything falling out the other end. I guess that’s what forks are for.
July 23rd, 2010 at 7:06 am
Love that first picture – a little blond angel!
July 23rd, 2010 at 11:49 am
Huge burrito fan here! I feel your burrito rolling pain…I can’t do that on any level of success what-so-ever! lol!
Love the whole turn your wrapper into art idea! What fun!
Now I have to head out to Chipotle!
July 23rd, 2010 at 12:05 pm
Yum-O! Miranda all of this food looks so amazingly delicious.
July 23rd, 2010 at 2:06 pm
I love mexican food! But I don’t know how to make burritos.
July 23rd, 2010 at 2:37 pm
oh your killing me with that food…I’m a native Texan, and the only acceptable mexican food is Tex-Mex…what they serve around here is just a step up from taco-bell….how I miss Texas!!
July 24th, 2010 at 2:45 am
all mexican food shares one interesting and unique characteristic–it is hideous and gorgeous at the same time.
July 24th, 2010 at 2:44 pm
You are all natural. I love that you share this with us.
July 24th, 2010 at 4:04 pm
You’re too cute! But now I want burritos. *sigh*
July 25th, 2010 at 9:12 pm
I’m not a native, but I lived in Houston long enough to develop a deep love for Tex Mex!
July 26th, 2010 at 2:23 am
Yummy! I’m ready to eat!
Stopping by from SITS!
July 27th, 2010 at 12:29 pm
