For I am the Dancing Queen

There are times in the early morning,
When the sun is beginning to stretch,
And the birds are still slumbering,
The stars not yet retired from their night of sparkling,
That I sneak outside,
And twirl in the dew-studded grass,
Until the first sunray kisses my brow.
For I am the Dancing Queen.

There are times when I’d like to trade the dry South Texas air,
For the warm air of the ocean,
The salty breeze of the sea.
I’d trade my dusty rocky ground
For some soft white sand,
pirouette around the seashells,
and practice arabesque with the turtles until the sun set–
For I am the Dancing Queen.

Sometimes, in a quiet aisle of a supermarket or hardware store,
When no one is looking,
And the right song is crackling from the speakers,
I feel my hips begin to shake,
And my toes begin to wiggle,
And before I can stop myself,
I’m twirling and giggling,
Leaping down aisle one,
sashaying down aisle nine,
And tapdancing in aisle 20.
There’s no point in being embarrassed,
or trying to hide behind the cans,
For I am the Dancing Queen.

And sometimes in the evening,
Well, to be honest, every evening,
My living room floor becomes a dance hall.
I twirl and sway,
bounce and jiggle,
jive and two step,
And just all around wiggle.
Around the coffee table,
Past the couch,
With Ben or without,
For I am the Dancing Queen.

And when I’m cooking dinner,
Or breakfast or lunch,
Or whipping up some cookies,
I’ll hear a certain song.
My hips start to twitch,
My feet start tapping.
And before I know it,
my whole body is swaying.
And as pots boil over and dinners burn,
Cookies blacken and chicken charcoals,
I am twirling and leaping and dancing with glee,
For even if I can’t cook,
I am the Dancing Queen.
Stay tuned, Invisible Friends! We have a new Pet shop story, a delicious recipe and more fun! Stay tuned!

I absolutely loved your poem. It reminds me of one I wrote years ago about dancing out on the lawn when I was a girl. I would go out at night when it was dark and leap and twirl to my own internal music. Annie

I love this-this reminds me so much of my mom. She loves to turn up the music and dance around while she cleans. I remember just twirling around and dancing with her to old songs by the Police.
