Magical Monday 31

“Excuse me.”

Jolted from my daydream, I looked down at a tiny ladybug on the sidewalk, clinging to a dandelion arching from a crack in the sidewalk. “I was wondering if you could do me a favor.”

“Sure,” I replied, hiding a smile.  I glanced left and right, making sure no one was coming, and squat down, bringing my nose close to the yellow fuzz.  “What do you need?”

“Could you walk my gnat for me?”

“What?” Nearly toppling over on my heels, I regained my perch.  “Um, I’m not sure what you mean.”

“My gnat.”  The ladybug pointed to a microscopic green dot on the fuzzy plumes she sat on.  “Isn’t he cute?  His name is Fred.”

“Fred the gnat?” My lips twitched.

The ladybug narrowed her black eyes.  “You don’t like his name?”

“Oh it’s not that at all,” I hastily assured her.  “I simply thought a gnat might have a…more whimsical name.”

“Like what?” she demanded, her wings fluttering slightly.

Flushing, I stuttered, “Um, like Pomegranate or Glitterfly or Geranimo…”

The ladybug shook her head.  “You’re absolutely terrible at naming gnats,” she informed me.  “Any gnat named by you would perish from sheer humiliation.”

“Thanks, I think,” I muttered. Shifting my weight, I peered down at the indignant red and black creature quivering with indignation on the dandelion.

“So, are you going to walk my gnat for me?” she demanded after a moment of silence.

“How do I walk a gnat?” I tumbled back onto the sidewalk, sprawling in the grass as I scrambled to regain my composure.

“How do you walk anything?” The ladybug rolled her eyes.  “With a leash, of course!”

I gave up, remaining scattered across the sharp blades of grass, freshly green with the promise of spring.  “And how do I hold a gnat leash?”

“Oh, don’t worry about Fred.  He’s quite good.  He won’t run away.”  The ladybug brushed the tip of my finger, her tiny wings fluttering.  “There you go!  Now, make sure he gets a good walk.  He’s been quite lazy lately and getting a bit of a tummy, I’m afraid.  Just to the tree and back will be fine.”

I glanced up.  The tree was five feet away.  Carefully holding out my finger, I started to stand.

“What are you doing?” she shrieked.

“Taking Fred for a walk,” I replied, my forehead crinkling in confusion.

“How’s he going to walk way up there?”

I glanced at my finger, then at the fuming ladybug.  “I guess he can’t.”  Holding out my finger, I carefully lowered myself to my knees.  Extending my hand, I inched forward on my knees, wincing at the rough sidewalk scraping against my skin.

“Much better.  I’ll be right here when you return.  Thanks so much!  Have a great time!”  The ladybug bustled about the dandelion, doing all sorts of important things ladybugs do.

Meanwhile, I inched forward, my finger floating above the sidewalk as I crawled to the tree and back.

According to the Ladybug, Fred had a wonderful time.  He’d love to walk again tomorrow.

Stay tuned, Invisible Friends!  We have minions tomorrow, the end of the Christmas Ballerina Wednesday and all sorts of delicious treats coming up!  Stay tuned!
