Magical Monday: Love

Posted on August 8th, 2011 in Magical Monday

Inspired by my guest post at Charlotte’s blog! (And Taylor Swift’s song “Sparks Fly)

It started in the water.

Paddling on his back, he stared up at the rows of white lights, a little grin on his face.  His feet kicked slowly, smoothly moving across the teal water.

“You look like an otter.”  I laughed, diving under.  His arm scooped around me, pulling me up so I dangled like a fish in the crook of his elbow.  He tossed me into the deep end and I shrieked with glee.  No one had been able to throw me like that since I was three.  Well, my mom hadn’t, anyway.

“I’ll race you to the slide.” I sloshed toward the lazy river, scuttling up the side where the ladder rested.  He grabbed my foot, pulling me under.  Flailing about in the slow current, I sputtered to the surface.

“That’s not fair!”  I shrieked, watching him race up the ladder.

“Sure it is.”  He grinned, nodding at the lifeguard as he sat at the plastic surface.  “I get to go first.”  He whooped as he went down, the echos twirling around and around the plastic tube.  He flew out at the end in a burst of white water, looking more like a bedraggled otter than before.  Grabbing the bar, I flipped into the slide, whirling around the plastic coils before crashing into the water at the end. I stayed under, swimming to the other side.  It always drove him nuts I could hold my breath so long.

“Ready to race?”  He was dancing on his toes when I surfaced, treading water slowly with his arms.  “Whoever wins buys.”

“Katies’ custard?” I licked my lips, then glanced at the clock.  “We have to hurry.  It’s almost nine, they close at ten.”

“We’ll get there.”  He winked, poised to start, one hand on the cement behind him.  “Ready?”

I placed my feet against the cement wall, tensing.  “Ready.”

“One, two…” His last word was lost in a explosion of water, a firework of droplets across my face.

Shoving off, I surged forward, my arms whipping across the water as fast as I could turn them.  My eyes burned and my lungs were tight, my legs a frenzy of fluttering.

And I still lost.

He wrapped his wet arms around me, pressing his lips to mine.  “I want a chocolate milkshake.”

“I want sprinkles.”  I flipped my hair out of my face.  “Best two out of three?”

“You’re on.”  He grinned, kissing my nose.  “One…”

“Two…”

“Three!”

And we were off, bursting across the pool as if the water might drain at any moment.  For that night, nothing except swimming and ice cream mattered.

Swimming, ice cream and us.

Stay tuned, Invisible Friends!  We have a week full of whimsy!
