Shimmer 22

Follow the shimmer.

Leaving Amaryllis to her cats and cooking, Magnolia, with her own calico perched on her shoulder like a pirate, crept into the bookstore.

“Magnolia?” her aunt shouted.  “Is that you?”

“Yes ma’am,” she yelled back, signaling for Cici and Bridget to creep down steps.  Bridget slipped off her heels, thundering down the steps in bare feet.   Cici winced, hurrying after her.

“Oh good.”  Magnolia’s aunt whirled around the corner, glancing suspiciously at the stairs.  “Did you hear something?”

“Oh, it was just…my new cat.”  Magnolia lied impulsively, squeezing the cat until it mewed.  “Isn’t it cute?”

“Cute?” her aunt hissed.  “Who’s going to feed it?  Where’s it going to live?”

“I thought…”  Magnolia trailed off.

“You thought I’d let you dump a cat on me!  Ridiculous!  That wasn’t a part of our agreement.  That’s an extra $20 out of every check, Magnolia.  Consider it your pet fee.”

Magnolia sighed.  She didn’t know why she bothered working at her aunt’s at all–she might as well slap on the chains and a loincloth and act as an Egyptian slave.  “You wanted something?”

“Oh, yes.”  Her aunt frowned and shoved a book into her hand.  “I need you to deliver this by three.”  She scowled.  “Without the cat.  And where have you been all day?  There’s piles and piles of sorting to be done!”

“I’m not surprised,” Magnolia muttered under her breath.  As the cats claws kneaded her shoulders, she forced a smile.  “I’ll be right back.  I’ve just got to grab something from downstairs…”

“Well hurry up!” her aunt barked.  “And stop by your uncle’s, will you?  He wanted to talk to you.”

“To me?”  Magnolia’s voice rang out in a squeak, the cat’s purr vibrating in her bones.   “Why?”

“I don’t know.  Something about Tibetan jewels and Magelena…or Madeline, some woman!”  Her aunt huffed.  “Well, don’t just stand there!  Get moving!”

“Right.”  Magnolia flew down the stairs, the cat hissing as she rounded the corner into the darkness.  Bridget and Cici froze, each clutching a Nancy Drew.

“What did she want?” Bridget whispered.

“I’ve got to make a delivery and my uncle wants to talk to me about the jewels.”  Magnolia winced, setting the cat on the floor.

“So where do we go to find this Shimmer?” Cici said, marking her fingers in quotations.  “It would take forever to go through town, interviewing person to person.”

“Not to mention most of them don’t want to talk about it,” Bridget snorted.  “I mean, it’s kind of a weird thing.  You have to admit.”

“I don’t even think Nancy Drew can help us,” Cici sighed, shaking a book.  Yellowed pages scattered across the floor.  The cat pounced on them, batting them into a frenzy around their feet.  Magnolia fingered her locket, watching as light reflected off the cheap gold onto the floor.  The cat purred, stalking the fractured flashes.

“Wait a minute…”  Magnolia whispered.  “That’s it!”

“That’s what?”  Cici stared at her.  Her shoulders fell.  “Oh no.  Not another brilliant idea.”

“Fingerprints!” Magnolia crowed, scooping up the cat and kissing it.

“Please tell me that’s not what you’re naming that cat.” Bridget backed away, covering her face.

“No, no.  It’s what Amaryllis has left everywhere.  It’s all we need to find…”

“You want us to find shimmering fingerprints 100 years old?”  Cici shook her head.  “The best CSI team in the world couldn’t find that.”

“Nope, but magical jewels could.  It’s like stained glass,” Magnolia explained, noting their confused faces.  “If we had something we could look through with a light, almost like a black light, the fingerprints would show up.”

“But Magelena destroyed our jewels.”  Bridget narrowed her eyes.

“Ours, but not my uncles.”  Magnolia raced up the stairs.  “Come on!”

The two friends shrugged, hurrying after her.

“She’s definitely not Bess,” Bridget muttered.

There is a lady that brought her child to day camp last week with Hannah who had a bird perched on her shoulder. Not quite as impressive as walking around with a cat on your shoulder, but still….something you don’t see every day.
