Friday Five

Posted on September 23rd, 2011 in Friday Five, Stories

This is the first week of the Blond Duck’s new feature–Friday Five plus Five Hundred Words of a new story!

The best of both worlds!

The Five Things needed for a perfect Birthday:

1) Flowers

2) Fajitas

3) Peanut butter frozen yogurt

4) Puppies in a box

Source.

5) Rollerblades!

And now, for a new story….

They always said she had her father’s eyes.

Bright, piercing blue; her eyes were the color of a early morning sky fading into the indigo edges of the ocean’s horizon.  A single look could soothe or scar you, depending on her mood.  People were known to shudder or scream, crossing themselves and scurrying away into the shadows.  She could also make a murderer on death row smile with a single raised eyebrow, a cancer patient laugh with fluttering lashes.

But what they didn’t know, and what she never would have told them, is what she could see with her eyes.

For if they had known, they would have run.

It wasn’t always that way.  Layla hadn’t been born different.  Ten fingers and toes, just like every other child, with a healthy appeitie for purred carrots and peas.  But when she turned three, something strange happened.

No one would tell her what happened, much to her dismay.  But she knew it was important, and she knew it was the reason behind her rage and frustration.

For as beautiful as her eyes were, she couldn’t see.

Well, at least what everyone else saw.

According to the state, Layla was blind.  She couldn’t drive, had a guide dog named Biscuit and read Braille faster than anyone in her class.  She could hear a penny drop on a tile floor dozens of feet away in a crowd.  When she was in a good mood, she was sweet and funny, always the first to burst into giggles punctuated by precious snorts.

But when she was in a bad mood, black waves of anger radiated from her like a sinking ship, sucking everyone under.  Ten minutes around her could ruin your whole week.  Everyone would ask Layla why she was so upset, she knew she could never tell them.  She knew if they told them, they would think she was crazy or making up stories to get attention.

They would never believe what she saw with her beautiful eyes.

Stay tuned, Invisible Friends, for a week of whimsy!
