Magical Monday 70
Please vote for my book to win, “The Night Santa Stole, I mean, Borrowed, My Sleigh!” and “If I was a Dog!”
The turkey had been carved, the feast long devoured. The last guests, lingering like a bad case of heartburn, had finally returned to their normal lives, dragging back to their jobs and ungrateful children. The kitchen sat quiet in the shadows of early dusk, empty of the chaos and frivolity that had swept through it in the past week. Porcelain dishes lay piled on the cabinets to be put away until Christmas, table linens cleaned and pressed with only a few gravy stains remaining.
But it wouldn’t stay quiet for long.
As the curtains of dusk closed in, the stars peeking through, a tiny giggle came from the corner of the pantry. A bag of sugar hopped down from the cabinet, joining a bowl of flour on the kitchen counter. An invisible hand sprinkled flour across a tea towel, a rolling pin rumbling towards the scene as a parade of eggs and sticks of butter marched behind it.
A flurry of stirring and mixing and rolling began, the oven clicking on and the pans sliding out in preparation. The smell of sugar and cinnamon filled the tiny kitchen, traveling through the house and weaving into even the darkest corners of the closets. As cookies danced to their spots on greased aluminum sheets, an elderly woman crept into the kitchen, her granddaughter’s hand in hers.
“Watch,” she whispered, her voice almost too low to be heard. Picking up her granddaughter, they both peered over the counter, watching as chocolate and milk mixed together on the stove and a pie crust was pinched by invisible fingers. As the oven door cracked open and two cookie sheets slid inside, a trail of sugar footprints crossed the stove. The granddaughter pressed her fingers to her lips, her eyes drinking in the sight before her.
With icing smeared cheeks and a flour stained dress, the fairy beat her wings over the cookies, sugar raining down. The oven door shut and she fluttered back to the counter, directing the spoons to stir in bowls and the pie dishes to fill with chocolate and peanut butter cream. Cookie cutters hopped from one towel of dough to the next, the newly cut cookies marching to empty plans gleaming with butter.
“What is she doing, Grandma?” the little girl whispered, watching as the kitchen fairy twirled a shortbread wreath around her arm.
“Baking Christmas cookies, my dear.” The grandmother’s eyes sparkled. ”For the season has begun.”
It was what the kitchen fairy had waited for all year, after all.
Stay tuned, Invisible Friends! A bit of fun tomorrow and the second Wings Wednesday!
And please vote for my picture books to win! It’ll be turned into an I-Pad app and copies will be donated to my old elementary school! So please vote!
