Magical Monday: Mermaids

When I slip into the cool teal,
Away from the splashing and shrieking,
Lost in a world of blue,
I transform into a dream.
Toes become tail,
Legs fused into one,
Under the surface I spin and surge,
Back and forth across the white cement sand.
The waves, the sun,
The cold air against my slick skin,
It’s only when I come back for breath,
That I glimpse reality again.
And I know it’s silly,
Just a secret fantasy,
But for an hour,
I don’t have a house to clean,
A job to do,
Chores to finish.
For an hour, it’s just me and the water,
Fused as one,
A maiden of the sea.
For if I had to be anything,
A mermaid I would be.

Oh how cute! I love the painting. Way back in 3rd grade, our teacher asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. I said, “A mermaid with a pink, purple, and blue tail.” I was devastated when she said I could not be a mermaid. I was equally as devastated when I was told my eyes would always be blue and not lavendar, though God knows I tried to convince people otherwise. Some adults can make childhood unpleasant, yay for those like you who have an imagination!
