Veteran
H. Lee Bryant
Once upon a time,
during a war no one understood,
A Southern boy took a ship across the world,
To fight for a country he believed in.
Once upon a time,
When duty and honor mattered,
And a handshake was binding,
A sweet Southern man met a sweet Southern nurse on the battle field.
After they made it home,
They built a life with two children,
Golf and pot roast on Sundays,
All while counting their blessings,
lessons learned on foreign shores in a now silent war.
He never said a word,
about the time he served,
The battles he waged,
the horror he saw.
Like so many others like him,
He was happy to be home,
Trading orders for chores,
and generals for wives with errands to run.
Like so many other great men,
Who risked everything for freedom,
He’s found his heavenly reward,
leaving much of his story untold.
But although we may never know,
We will never forget,
One of the greatest men of the greatest generations,
To ever serve in a country they were proud to call home.
Dedicated to H. Lee Bryant and the surviving veterans of World War 2
Happy Veteran’s Day!
