Recipe and Review: The Explosionist

Posted on August 21st, 2013 in Book Review, Recipe and Review

I hate boring books.  Luckily, The Explosionist  isn’t a boring book.  Author Jenny Davidson puts a twist on 1930s Scotland and creates an alternate world where Napoleon won Waterloo and spiritualism and the age of Enlightenment come together.   It’s a cool mix of paranormal, science fiction and history. In this world, Sophie uses her gift of talking to the dead to solve a mystery of a murder of a medium who did a seance at her great-aunt’s house.  But this isn’t just any murder– it’s one that involves secret officials and spies that reveal a dark underbelly that could change all of Sophie’s plans and throw her into the arms of her secret crush.

It’s really hard to explain, but it’s really cool.  Trust me.

Poor Sophie, when she’s not chasing murderers, chatting with ghosts or studying for exams, is stuck eating nasty dorm food at her all girl’s school.  The descriptions of grey meat and greasy vegetables with stone-hard rolls made me want to vomit and cry at the same time.

Therefore, I had to make something delicious.

Like these bacon-blue cheese stuffed burgers from Taste of Home.

You can read with one hand and eat with another.  Perfect.

Stay tuned, Invisible Friends!  A new waffle recipe tomorrow!

I found the Christmas story you sent me a couple of years ago and re-read it. That has nothing to do with this book, but there it is. Happy Wednesday, dear Duckie!
