On Thursday, while I was tutoring….

Kid 1:  ”A whole story is one sentence.”

Me:  ”No, it’s more than that.”

Kid 1:  ”Two sentences.”

Me:  ”Seven.”

Kid 1:  ”Three.”

Me:  ”Sold.”

Kid 1:  (squinting at paper)  ”How do you spell cousin?”

Me: “C-O-U-S-I-N.”

Kid 1:  ”Thanks.”

Me:  (looking over his shoulder)  ”Martin Luther King was your cousin?”

Kid 1: (nods)  ”He lives in Mexico.”

Me:  ”Are you sure?  Martin Luther King Jr. died several years ago.”

Kid 1: (snorts)  ”I just saw him at Christmas.  He can make laws, you know.”

Me:  ”Really?”

Kid 1:  ”Yup.  When he moves to the US, he’s going to make law I can play video games all day.  No more school for me.”  (stops and thinks).  ”You can still come over though.  I like you.”

Me:  ”Thanks.”

Kid 1:  ”No writing though.”

Me: “Just video games?”

Kid 1:  ”Yup.  I love video games.”

Me: (sighs) “I know.”

Kid 2: (playing story game where I write one sentence, she writes a sentence.)  ”Henry the moose wanted to dance?”

Me:  ”Haven’t you ever seen a moose dance?”

Kid 2: (shakes her head seriously)  ”I’m going to be Belinda.”  (writes, “I’m Belinda, a purple hippo.”

Me: (writing)  ”You’re the most beautiful hippo in the world!” Henry cried.  ”Will you dance with me?”

Kid 2: (writes) NO.

Me: (writing)  ”You’re breaking my heart!  You must dance with me!  You must!”

Kid 2:  (writes) Hippos don’t dance.  They fling poo.

Me: (bursts out into laughter)

Kid 2: “Well, they do.”

Kid 3:  (after reading a story about a SEAL training session where the man had to carry a 75 lb. rock for a mile, haul logs reciting a poem, swim across freezing rivers and run through mud)  ”I could do that.”

Me: “You could not.”

Kid 3: “Could so.”

Me: “The rock ways as much as you!”

Kid 3: (snorts) “I lift weights.  Check it out.”  (flexes)

Me:  ”That would be like carrying me one mile up a hill.  Think you could do that?”

Kid 3:  ”I could carry the rock.  Not you.”

Me:  ”Why not?  I thought you were tough.”

Kid 3:  ”I’m tough, not stupid.  You’re heavy!”
